‘We need to take a picture of the back of your eye‘: Woman shares how eye doctor tried to trick her into spending more money

Woman talking(l+r), Eye exam(c)

This eye doctor chose the wrong person to try to upsell.

In a viral TikTok video, a patient explains how she dodged all of the doctor’s sales tactics and ended up walking out without paying a cent more than her co-pay.

Tanya (@tanya_01_87) says she went to the doctor for an eye exam and to update her frames, but they were trying to get her to spend more money every step of the way.

First, she was asked if she’d be willing to pay an extra trip $29.99 for a photo of the back of her eye. This helps your eye doctor check for certain diseases they couldn’t otherwise see, according to WebMD.

Tanya declined the extra charge, stating her goal was to walk out of there and only have to pay her $10 copay. (It also seems like the person who advised her to get the extra eye image didn’t do a great job of explaining the health benefits.)

While the person continued to insist that it was doctor-recommended, Tanya continued to decline.

This was one thing viewers were split about. Some said it was important enough that Tanya should have paid the extra $30, and others wrote that if it is so important, the additional eye imaging should be covered by insurance.

“The $30 picture of the back of my eye is how they discovered I have intracranial hypertension. an issue that could lead to blindness if left untreated so….” a person wrote.

“It’s crazy that something vital to eye and overall health would require an extra fee and not just be covered by insurance. This country is wild,” another added.

Next, it was time to pick frames. Even though Tanya had a $300 limit for frames, the eye doctor walked her over to the designer frames, where she most definitely would have had to pay money out of pocket to make up for the difference in price.

“I want cheap frames, and she was like, ‘But you have a 300 dollar limit.’ And I was like, ‘Um, no, I’m just gonna go ahead and get the cheap frames,” Tanya recounts.

While Tanya picked out two $100 frames, the total still came out to $50 after insurance (and that’s after Tanya told them to remove the warranty they’d tacked on). To avoid the extra cost, Tanya put back one of the frames and told them to just use her current pair of glasses.

They still insisted on the warranty for putting lenses in her new frames, but Tanya pointed out she’d had them for three years and didn’t need a warranty.

“I don’t wanna pay anything out of pocket. That’s the point of me having insurance. So I don’t have to pay out of pocket,” Tanya says.

By the end of it all, Tanya achieved her goal, only having to hand over the $10 copay.

Eye care can be an expensive but necessary cost—even with insurance like Tanya experienced. About 2 in 3 U.S. adults have some kind of vision insurance coverage, per the Vision Council’s 2022 consumer insights report, but that doesn’t translate to frequency of care. Only 53% of people reported having an eye exam in the last year.

Tanya’s video has more than 160,000 views and over a thousand comments, many of whom called out these costs.

“I get my prescription and order my frames online. Gone are the days of $500 glasses are DONE,” a person wrote, echoing other comments about getting your frames cheaper online.

“I love that you advocated for yourself! Good job!” a commenter wrote.

“Standed on business lol,” another chimed in.

A Cat In Oregon Gave Its Owner The Bubonic Plague

When you think about diseases like bubonic plague, you probably assume that’s not the sort of thing we have to worry about anymore.

But everything old is new again, and whether it’s thanks to anti-vaxxers, melting permafrost, or happenstance, that goes for viruses and bacteria, too.

Recently, the Associated Press says that health officials in Oregon have found a case of bubonic plague – otherwise known as the Black Death – in an adult male.

They say he got it from his pet, a cat that did not survive.

The plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, a bacteria that lives in rodents and their fleas. It infects lymph nodes, causing a fever and a headache, and left untreated, can spread into the bloodstream.

Source: ShutterstockSource: Shutterstock

It’s considered rare in humans these days, but an unfortunate handful of Americans do contract it every year. Between 200 and 700 cases are reported across the world every year, but almost all of them survive, thanks to antibiotics.

In the world before antibiotics, the “black death” managed to wipe out around 30% of Europe’s entire population – around 20 million people.

By the 17th century, people had caught on that staying away from the infected could help contain the plague, and that helped quite a bit.

Nowadays, tough, how would your cat catch such a thing?

If you live in states like Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, and Colorado, they would catch it the same way animals did in the Middle Ages – by encountering infected vermin or their blood-carrying fleas.

Source: ShutterstockSource: Shutterstock

The symptoms to look out for are wide-ranging and common – fever, loss of appetite, etc. – which means it can be hard to catch in time to save their lives.

Hopefully the doctors in those areas are sharp enough to remember to test humans in time, though.

Finger’s crossed.

When Will ‘Invincible’ Season 2, Episode 8 Come Out?

Invincible Season 2

If it only seems like yesterday since Invincible‘s second season returned from hiatus, you’re not too far off with that internal calendar. The weekly series recently returned with four more episodes, and now, the season finale is already (almost) here. At least the weekly release schedule draws out the deliciousness of Amazon’s ability to keep the Supe fires burning while the rest of that world tries to regain its access.

What Time Will ‘Invincible’ Season 2, Episode 8 Be On Prime Video?

Thursday, April 4 is the magical day when you can gobble up the episode called, “I Thought You Were Stronger.”

That title actually corresponds to a well-known set of comic book panels for those who are into reading that medium, but we shall not spoil anything here.

Instead, we’ll note that once this episode is over, you’ll start wishing it was already time for the third season. And do not worry on that front because Amazon renewed the second and third seasons at the same time. Hopefully, we’ll see the next season drop sooner than the 2 1/2 year wait we had between the first and second seasons, but thank goodness that Robert Kirkman’s other brainchild, The Walking Dead, will continue to churn out second seasons of the new spin offs on AMC in 2025. And of course, Amazon will bring us more of its adaptation of Garth Ennis’ The Boys comics soon, too.

Why Did Disney Plus Change Color?

As subscribers know, Disney’s streaming service has said “I do” to another streaming giant, Hulu.

Subscribers to the immensely popular streaming service, Disney+, may have noticed something different when they visit the app on their TV or mobile device.

Article continues below advertisement

Indeed, Disney+ has changed its color scheme. Why? The deviation from the well-known dark blue has to do with a new marriage of sorts, leading to a happily ever after with another huge streamer.

Read on for the full story.

So, why did Disney Plus change its color scheme?

As subscribers know, Disney’s streaming service has said “I do” to another streaming giant, Hulu.

And instead of going green for Hulu, the two streamers have seemingly blended their trademark hues together to birth a new, calming color: turquoise.

As Vulture reports, the color actually has a sweet, Disney-themed name: Aurora.

“It’s an homage to both the aurora borealis as well as Sleeping Beauty,” Disney executive Joe Earley explained. He also confirmed the shade is a combination of “Hulu’s signature green into Disney+ blue.”

Article continues below advertisement

Meanwhile, customers can bundle the two services for a surprisingly low price of $9.99 per month for the basic package. You can add ESPN for the monthly rate of $14.99.

If you already have Disney+, you’ll need to activate your Hulu account to gain access to that content, per the streamer’s Help Center page. You can no longer just get Hulu as a standalone product.

Fans have mixed reactions to the new Disney+ color.

Not surprisingly, fans are reacting to the color change, with some weighing in that they’re on board, while others aren’t loving the on-brand switch.

“The new Disney+ app color is terrible. Looks like it’s going to puke on the other apps,” snarked one person via X, who clearly isn’t a fan.

“Who decided that the new @DisneyPlus color was a good idea? I had an infection last week and that was the color of my phlegm,” someone else hilariously tweeted.

To be fair, the color found many supporters online, like this person who tweeted, “Don’t get why so many people don’t like the new color for Disney Plus. I think it’s just fine as it is. I actually think the color palette is kinda pretty. There has to at least be one person who likes it (other than me LOL), right?”

For the record, we aren’t mad at the color change, and really like the back story and planning that went into the new shade.

That said, we are all entitled to our opinions!

Upcoming HBO Series ‘The Sympathizer’ Is Based on a Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novel — What to Know

HBO just dropped the trailer for the upcoming limited series The Sympathizer, a tale of espionage that follows an anonymous narrator: a North Vietnamese mole in the South Vietnamese army (Hoa Xuande). Robert Downey Jr. — either donning intricate disguises or playing multiple characters — wears many faces, hair pieces, and diverse outfits in the trailer. He informs our protagonist at the onset, “The Vietnam War. It’s over. Your job, it’s just begun.”

As the 1970s wash over our eyes — from the flashy wardrobes to the cruising cars and the bopping beat — so begins the tale of “The Captain,” whose character is both an immigrant in the US and a mole. He’s a clever spy trying to blend in despite his somewhat outcast status. As various adversaries and allies load up their guns and deliver nail-biting dialogue, discussing the likelihood of a “spy” in their ranks, familiar faces work their way into the trailer, including the beloved Grey’s Anatomy alumnus Sandra Oh.

Park Chan-wook of Oldboy and Decision to Leave recognition directs the first three episodes of this seven-episode miniseries, along with directors Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden.

The trailer jumps around a bit — featuring Downey in various get-ups and close-ups of our fear-stricken protagonist — building anticipation for a twisty-turny spy series. If it’s anything like the novel, the series will also traverse genres, including dark comedy, metafiction, historical fiction, and political thriller, so what do we know about the source material?

Spoiler Warning for ‘The Sympathizer’ novel

The 2015 novel, which earned author Viet Thanh Nguyen the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, follows The Captain, who is forced to flee to the United States with his General toward the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he spies on them. He reports his discoveries back to the Viet Cong, and, over time, runs into a little internal turmoil and cognitive dissonance regarding his original loyalties and his new life.

While in the US, the Captain recounts working as an advisor on a film similar to Apocalypse Now, before he ultimately returned to Vietnam as part of a guerrilla raid against communists.

The book begins with the Fall of Saigon and reflects on the Americanization of the Vietnam War in international literature, which is a central theme in the novel (and destined to be one in the show as well). We know how often history is rewritten in less than accurate or not fully encompassing lights…

The protagonist is a complicated mix of contradictions and dualities, which is destined to make this show a character-driven saga despite its thrilling narrative core. He was raised in Vietnam, but he attended college in the US, which greatly influences his perspective. He’s also a North Vietnamese mole yet a friend to South Vietnamese military officials. And don’t forge: he’s also a US CIA Agent…

The HBO limited series is scheduled to premiere on April 14, 2024 on Max.

Moms Who Don’t Know How to Share Bad News Are Going Viral

“when my rabbit died my mom brought it WITH HER to pick me up from school and made me guess what was in the blanket”

Mustafa Gatollari - Author
Moms Dont Know How to Share Bad News

TiKToker Brandon Grogan (@brandongrogancooks) posted a video on TikTok in the hopes of finding out if other people have encountered the same issue with their mother as he does: not being able to receive bad news in a “normal” way.

It turns out, that there are more than a few people who’ve got the same problem.

Article continues below advertisement

“This is just me but does anyone else have a mom who has no clue how to break bad news like a normal person?” he says, pushing some ingredients from a plate onto a pan.

He then scoops out some tomato paste from a can, “This is a real conversation I had with my mom. Hey Brandon I have bad news, there’s a good chance I’m gonna go blind.”

He continues, “I’m like oh my God that’s awful, it’s not genetic right? She’s like, no, no, I got an ingrown eyelash and I read online that if not properly treated it can lead to blindness,” he throws his hands up in the air as he looks to the camera and goes on speaking.

Article continues below advertisement

Source: TikTok | @brandongrogancooks

“Now I don’t think that would ever happen, but what the f—- you call me for sounds like you should go get this treated.”

Continuing with his theme of cooking while talking into the camera, his clip cuts to him pouring some salt into a pot of water. My mom also had a bad memory so sometimes this happens, she’ll have like bad news and then she’ll be like hey you know how your Great Grandpa has cancer, right?”

Article continues below advertisement

He pours some dry pasta into the boiling water, “Nope, nope, I had no clue this is the first time I’m ever hearing of this. Great woman, but there’s never like a, hey are you sitting down right now? It’s more like, hey you’re driving down the highway going 70 miles per hour and you got my on speakerphone via your car’s Bluetooth, right?”

“All right good glad you have a second,” he quips, pouring cream into a pain making what looks like the finishing touches of his pasta sauce. By the time his video’s done, so is the video. He shows off the pasta bowl garnished with herbs at the end of the clip, stating, “Anyways we cooked some pasta a la vodka.”

Article continues below advertisement

As it turns out, there were other people who could relate to his story, like one TikToker who wrote that they, too, have a mom who isn’t the best when it comes to breaking bad news.

In this particular instance, however, it doesn’t have to do with an ailing family member, or freaking out over something they read on WebMD.

Instead, it has to do with the death of a family pet.

Lauren (@_laurenrosee1) stitched his video, which then cuts to a screenshot of a text message conversation she had with her mother. There’s a picture of a cat in their text: “R.I.P. – tiki (I put her down tonight ) sweet dreams [fading rose emoji]”

Source: TikTok | @_laurenrosee1

She responds to her: “Why didn’t you tell me !” followed by two crying emojis.

“I am telling you,” her mother writes in a reply.

Another TikToker provided yet another example of a mom who wasn’t too great at breaking bad news to someone.

Article continues below advertisement

Andy (@andyzzroom) shared a tragic story of how she learned that her boyfriend at the time ended up passing away in a car accident.

The TikToker says that initially there was some confusion surrounding the accident because investigators initially thought that there may have been a girl involved in the auto wreck.

Source: TikTok | @andyzzroom

Article continues below advertisement

However, this confusion was just chalked up to the fact that Andy’s departed former boyfriend had “really long hair.” Her boyfriend’s mom ended up calling her mother to check and make sure Andy wasn’t with him, and when Andy’s mom went to her room, she found her daughter fast asleep.

The mom, who just lost her son, told Andy’s mother to inform her daughter that her boyfriend didn’t survive the wreck and that she should probably inform Andy right when she wakes up so “she doesn’t find out through somebody else.”

Article continues below advertisement

Andy’s mom ended up going back to bed, and it appears that the TikToker woke up before her mother got a chance to tell her the news, because she ended up receiving a message from someone else she never met before who told her he had passed away in the car accident.

At this point in the video, things take a dark turn, as Andy flips out because her boyfriend didn’t respond to her messages from the night before. Her younger sister “made fun” of her, which Andy says was rooted in her just being a kid and attempting to assure her that he was fine.

Article continues below advertisement

Her mother then tells Andy that her boyfriend “probably killed himself to get away from [her].”

Andy went to school anyway not knowing what was going on, stating that she was “bawling her eyes out the entire time,” after her name sounded off over the intercom at school and she was notified that her mother was there to pick her up.

After getting into the car, she immediately asks her mom what’s going on, but her parents don’t tell her anything. It wasn’t until her boyfriend’s family rang her up to tell her that he died, but Andy didn’t know until a week later that they had given her mom a ring after they learned it had happened, urging her to tell the young woman so she didn’t find out from someone else.

The ‘Abigail’ Filmmakers Used A ‘Blood Cannon’ To Make The Vampire Flick Extra Gory

Abigail Vampire
Universal Pictures

With Abigail, directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin were prepared to make a fun little horror flick featuring a star-studded cast and some ballerina motifs. You know, to prepare you for 2025’s John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. But it turned out to be a lot bloodier than one would think a vampire flick would be. At least compared to Twilight, anyway.

Gillett revealed that while making the film, there was no such thing as too much blood. He told Collider, “It’s fun… At the end of the day, shooting your actors with a blood cannon, they’re excited for it, as well.” Yes! You read that right: A Blood Cannon. Just picture those Nickelodeon slime canons but with fake blood. We come to this place for magic, after all.

The filmmakers wanted there to be so much blood, you can almost feel it seeping out of the screen. Bettinelli-Olpin joked that they used “all the blood on planet Earth” while filming, much like when Barbie used all the pink paint on Earth. It balances itself out eventually.

Abigail follows Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Angus Cloud, and Kathryn Newton as a group of kidnappers who look after Abigail, the aforementioned ballerina and daughter of a crime boss. Unfortunately, that crime boss happens to be Dracula, and Abigail has an appetite for blood. She would be besties with M3GAN.

The movie is over-the-top, but that’s the point. “For us, the audience can just latch onto something if it’s real, whether they know it’s fake or not , it’s obviously not real blood, but you feel it in the room,” Bettinelli-Olpin explained. “The actors can interact with it. Everything just becomes more alive, and it has that energy to it when you’re doing it for real on set. We came up trying to shoot everything almost doc style — running around, you can shoot up, down, left, right, spin around, go anywhere you want.” This seemed to work for Immaculate, so things are looking good!

Abigail hits theaters on April 19th.

A TikTok user claimed none of the women on ‘Saturday Night Live’ are ‘hot,’ and the rest of the internet has thoughts

no hot women on snl

Saturday Night Live has been on the air since 1975 and has seen dozens upon dozens of cast members grace that famous stage during its 49 year run—but apparently none of those people have been “hot women,” according to one TikTok user’s recent viral hot take.

You see, all of the drama began this week when TikTok user Jahelis posted a video claiming that SNL has never hired a “hot woman” before:

https://www.tiktok.com/@jahelis/video/7348937875678940458

In the TikTok, the user claims that the legendary variety sketch show has never hired a “hot woman.” “I’m not saying that every single woman who has been a cast member on SNL is ugly,” the user clarified. “It’s just that none of them have ever been hot.”

While she admits some former female cast members, like Kristen Wiig, are “conventionally attractive,” she still doubles down, stating they’re still not “hot.” She went on to specifically use current cast member Heidi Gardner as an example of this phenomenon, stating that she tends to play characters that are perceived as “hot” in her skits, but is—in the user’s opinion—not actually “hot” by everyday standards.

The user then goes on to state that SNL has, on the other hand, hired “hot men” before, citing “a young Jimmy Fallon,” Andy Samberg, Jason Sedakis, and Bowen Yang as examples.

Comments on the video are mostly taken aback by the hot take, with one user writing, “This is so random and mean” while another wrote, “Internalized misogyny!! You clocked yourself, babe.”

Naturally, fans of the show had a lot of thoughts on this intense claim—as well as some A+ jokes—and were quick to share them on X:

One user even took it upon themselves to create an entire thread of examples:

The whole ordeal has gone so viral, even members of the cast have commented on the TikTok’s claims.

First, cast member Chloe Fineman commented on the original TikTok from her own verified account, simply writing, “We are hot tho…”

Next, cast member Sarah Squirm tweeted a humorous response:

And finally, cast member Chloe Troast took to TikTok itself to duet the video:

So, there you have it! Whether or not more SNL cast members will share reactions to the hot take remains to be seen, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens when Kristen Wiig takes up hosting duties this Saturday, April 6th.

Groom’s Wholesome Bachelor Party

“Omg a good one!! lol I hope TikTok brings me to Sam and Luke’s response/ reaction “

Mustafa Gatollari - Author
Groom's Wholesome Bachelor Party
Source: TikTok | @sb.reads

When you think of men’s bachelor parties, scenes from the first Hangover movie probably flood your mind: doing cocaine off of exotic dancers’ hip bones. Persistent drinking. Pills, grass, debauchery, puking, larceny — pretty much anything goes.

Article continues below advertisement

However, some folks aren’t into all of that stuff and would much rather have a chill session with their friends that won’t potentially leave them with a criminal record or a called-off wedding.

This sounds like the kind of “wholesome” endeavor this man, Luke, was a part of with his friends while out and about on his bachelor party trip in Charleston, South Carolina. Luke was overheard by someone, a TikTok user named Sam (@sb.reads), as he couldn’t stop gushing over how much he loved the woman he was going to marry, who also goes by Sam.

The TikTok user decided to give a shout-out on social media highlighting how much Luke was head-over-heels for his beloved and that she wished them all the best in their lives together.

She begins the video with a smile on her face, talking about how great of a guy Luke is: “If your name is Sam and your fiance’s name is Luke and he is currently in Charleston, South Carolina for his bachelor party and he was at a bar on King Street called Uptown Social tonight, on Friday, March 22nd, I just want you to know that that man loves you so much,” she says in the clip.

“He could not stop gushing about you and how you are the love of his life and the most beautiful person he has ever met and how he’s the luckiest man in the entire world. And he loves you so much and I wish you two all the happiness in the world. Also he asked to take a selfie with my group so here is all my friends and Luke and we are so happy for you that man loves you and I love that for you,” she added in the video.

“Wishing you two all the best congratulations,” she tells Sam, who came across the viral TikTok video and decided to post a stitched response of her own to the glowing statement from the TikTok user.

In the clip she wades from side to side, grinning widely, “But, fun fact, I’m a wedding photographer so I love love, I love all things weddings and I’m based in Martha’s Vineyard and Boston and I travel all over New England doing weddings and couples and engagements and proposals, so I love love and this is literally the cutest thing to ever happen to me so, have a good Saturday,” she says at the end of her clip.

“At the beginning of this video, I was like ‘OMG, not another one!’ But thank God I stayed and this turned out to be a great one! So refreshing! Wishing Sam and Luke the absolute best!” they wrote.
