Senior Dog Thinks The Veterinarian Tech Is Just There To Hug Her, And She’s Really Into It

Going to the vet can be extremely stressful for dogs. From the car ride to the cold, unfamiliar room full of strangers, the whole experience can feel unpleasant, to say the least. You can’t quite blame most pups for being suspicious of veterinarians and vet techs.

But every once in a while, there exists a pup who is so cheerful and positive that he even loves the vet. Like this senior dog, for example, who is quite simply a precious ball of canine sunshine.

Kayleen Campbell, a certified vet tech at an emergency animal hospital, came across this pup at work one day. She had to assist with drawing blood from the dog, which involves holding the neck.

“We have to hold off the jugular vein after drawing blood,” Kayleen explained on Reddit. “But this sweet old girl thought I was just there for the hugs.”

Indeed, the 12-year-old dog just kept leaning back happily into Kayleen for more snuggles. Needles? What needles? This is a cuddle fest, right?

These Alexa ‘Intruder Alert’ Memes Aren’t Going to Protect Your Home

People are setting up their Alexa devices to respond to the phrase “intruder alert,” and while the results are unlikely to scare off an actual home invader, they might make them laugh the entire time they’re stealing your stuff.

The meme got its start on Reddit in the /me_irl sub-reddit. On Jan. 22, user EsG_Nitro posted a list of instructions for Alexa to execute when it heard the phrase “Alexa, intruder alter.” The device was supposed to turn on a red light; say, “Resistance is futile. Time to die”; and play the Imperial March from Star Wars at full volume.

Me irl from me_irl

From there, the meme got spread around Reddit with people posting both the original and various new versions.

You can make Alexa your home’s administrator from tf2

Yare yare daze… from ShitPostCrusaders

Ok now this is epic. from Hiphopcirclejerk

A user named Wolfey1618 even added a blank template so people who didn’t own an Alexa could get in on the fun.

Alexa meme template

And, of course, it wasn’t long before people started posting videos of themselves testing out the instructions.

Intruder alert

They requested someone do it (Turn sound on)

From there, the meme spread to Twitter, where people posted both the original version of the instructions and their own variations.

One tweet showing the original instructions has nearly 60,000 retweets and over 200,000 likes, as of this posting.

People are also posting videos of Alexa executing the commands on both Twitter and YouTube.

Here is an excellent Shrek version, complete with green lighting.

Here’s one for Skyrim fans.

Here’s another example, which is only notable because instead of saying, “Resistance is futile,” Alexa seems to say, “Existence is futile,” giving the whole thing a more surreal, melancholy feel.

Please note, this doesn’t seem to work quite as well with Google Home. Something about it saying “OK, changing the lamp to red,” just ruins the mood.

This is a fairly new meme, but with a virtually endless number of commands that Alexa can carry out, there’s no reason to think we’ll see an end to these videos any time soon.

Struggling McDonald’s Worker Makes Her Customer Smile, So He Comes Back To Give Her His Car

One smile can go a long way. Take it from Vicki Anderson, who works at McDonald’s in South Hutchinson, Kansas.

Vicki’s car broke down just before Christmas 2018. Her windows stopped working, her air conditioner was shot and she had to climb through the passenger side just to get in. She relied on her co-workers to get her to and from work. Needless to say, not having a car or much extra income made things really difficult for the hard-working woman.

One day, Vicki was manning the drive-thru window when one of her regular customers, Chris Ellis, drove up to place his order. Chris has always appreciated Vicki’s upbeat personality and caring demeanor.

The pair struck another up one of their casual conversations, during which Vicki asked Chris if he knew anyone who could fix her car but wouldn’t charge her much. Chris didn’t really give her an answer, but the conversation stuck with him for the rest of the day.

Days later, Chris returned to McDonald’s with a surprise up his sleeve. He flagged Vicki down and asked her to step outside with him and his son, Josh.

“You remember talking to me the other day?” he asked the confused employee. “About a car,” she remembered.

“You’re a blessing to me. You make me smile every time I come through here and I don’t forget stuff like that,” says Ellis.

And with that, Vicki’s loyal customer handed her the keys to his own vehicle. You don’t want to miss her reaction.

Elementary School Principal Comes Under Fire For Using A ‘Mock Funeral’ To Motivate Teachers

The principal of Getwell Elementary School in Memphis, Tennessee is facing backlash for a deeply misguided tactic to “motivate” teachers.

According to Yahoo Lifestyle, principal Tina Smith wanted to encourage teachers to work harder after the school performed poorly in a 2015 Public School Review. Fox 13 reports that data showed the school had scored in the bottom 50% for both math and reading in the state.

In an effort to improve performance, the principal decided to host a “mock funeral” at the school and invited teachers to the meeting. Pictures obtained by Fox 13 show a flyer depicting a student holding a report card with a heading that reads, “In loving memory of Madam 2 to 3 years behind.” Another photo shows an actual casket at the mock memorial service. Inside the casket is a baby doll.

“Her point was, she was saying is we are burying the data. And she used the song ‘Children Are Our Future,’” Keith Williams, the executive director of the Shelby County Teachers Association, told Fox 13. He also said that the teachers were instructed to act as if they were in morning.

Unfortunately, the tactic proved traumatic for several members of the faculty.

“Some of the teachers who recently had challenges with child birth were overwhelmed and just left the room. Some of them are off today because of it,” Keith said. “If you think, by any stretch of the imagination, that burying a child in the presence of mostly women is symbolic of improving instruction, something is wrong with you.”

In response to the controversy, a representative of Shelby County Schools told Yahoo Lifestyle:

“The principal planned a variety of activities during in-service last week aimed to renew the focus and commitment of staff members in the new year. One activity involved a mock funeral, which was designed as a symbolic act to eliminate negativity and excuses associated with previous years of poor academic performance. Discussions focused on positive strategies and expectations for helping all students be successful. However, after speaking with a few concerned staff members, the principal acknowledged how the activity could be seen as insensitive and personally apologized to the entire staff.”

PewDiePie Is Killing Memes is a popular in-joke which refers to an idea that memes featured in Meme Review video have already peaked in popularity and are reaching the end of their “lifespan”. The trope is associated with the double hand clap performed by PewDiePie in his videos, with the implied meaning that PewDiePie is killing memes by clapping his hands. Jeweler Creates Unique Rings And Accessories Using Human Teeth, Hair, And Animal Bones

Does this sound like something you would wear on a daily basis?

Jacqui Williams, a 26-year-old jeweler from Melbourne, Australia, is using human teeth, hair, and animal bones to create unique pieces of jewelry for people.

“I once made a ring for someone in America from their grandfather’s molar, that was his wisdom tooth, that had been removed whilst he was alive,” Jacqui told Caters News. “I found a dead fox a few months ago, I buried her and then dug her up, and I plan to use some of those bones for carving and to preserve the skull. Pretty much any animal parts that are legal to own in Victoria, Australia, I will use.”

Sounds…interesting! I mean, I’m into it, but something tells me Jacqui’s designs aren’t for everyone, and that’s totally okay! Jacqui says that a lot of the pieces she creates signify special bonds between two people, alive or deceased, and is a unique and sentimental way to honor a loved one.

“I started to become fascinated with how our modern culture deals with death and the taboo that follows it, no one wants to speak about death,” she said. “I stumbled across a community of like-minded people and collectors of curiosities and oddities, people who not only wanted to talk about death, but who wanted to collect specimens. They wanted to give another life to things that once were, this then started the ever-growing collection of bones and oddities of my own.”

Jacqui says she’s had many bizarre requests, though she tries to fill as many orders as she possibly can. ”

“I would happily use any kind of bone the client wanted for their piece of jewelry, as long as it is legal to use in Melbourne,” she continued. “I have been asked to make a ring out of gallstones, and although they ended up using teeth for their ring, I would probably use gallstones if given the opportunity again. And I do have two human ribs, gifted to me, from a medical skeleton that I plan to carve and make into jewelry soon.”

Can’t wait to see the final results!

Netflix's Upcoming 'Siempre Bruja' Will Make You Book the Next Flight to Cartagena

image

Good news for worldly lovers of Netflix. The streaming platform is quickly becoming global thanks to its growing international roster. With successful Australian series like Instant Hotel and Back with the Ex, as well as their impressive number of Spanish-speaking shows, the platform is well on its way to conquering the world.

February 1 will see the release of many shows on Netflix, but perhaps the most exciting one yet is Colombia’s Siempre Bruja, or Always a Witch to English speakers.

The imaginative show delivers breakout performances from some of the youngest and most talented Latin American actors. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the show’s premiere.

image

What is Siempre Bruja about?

The bruja in pop culture is set to live on with this Colombian series that follows a 19-year-old slave and witch, Carmen, who’s about to be burned at the stake in colonial Cartagena for falling in love with a white man.

With the help of an old wizard, she can escape her doomed fate. Carmen has the option to travel to a time and place where people no longer believe in witches (aka present day), on one condition: she must promise to never use her bruja powers.

image

When she agrees, she’s transported to modern-day Colombia, where she makes new friends, learns about internet apps, and has to kind of make a new life for herself in 2019, while adjusting to the fact that 1646, for her, was just yesterday.

But as the title suggests, once a witch, always a witch — and Carmen has to contend with her powers while trying to fit into present-day society.

Who is Angely Gaviria?

The starring role of Carmen is brought to life by newcomer Angely Gaviria, an Afro-Colombian model, dancer, and actress originally from Cartagena, who’s currently living in Bogotá.

image

Before appearing on Siempre Bruja, Angely played small roles in Colombian productions such as Niche, La Selección, 2091, and Los Morales before landing the recurring part of Julia Cervantes in the telenovela Pambelé.

Siempre Bruja is a series about love,” the protagonist told El País in Spanish. “Without its magic, there’s no point to the struggle. Carmen takes risks for love, there’s no other reason.”

“I would have never imagined playing a witch,” the young actress says in the same interview. She calls her character Carmen “empowered, decisive and lovable.”

Angely is also hopeful that her starring role will bring other Afro-Latino actors into the spotlight. “We’re used to seeing Black talent in secondary roles… but things are changing because our Afro history is gaining a space in Colombia and in the whole world,” she added.

image

Where is Siempre Bruja filmed?

As viewers will notice from the gorgeously colorful backgrounds of the series, Siempre Bruja was filmed entirely in Colombia. Locations span Bogotá, Cartagena, and Honda —  small area in the Andean region of Tolima.

The landscapes look so stunning and beautiful, this series will have you looking up flights to Colombia.

Will there be a Season 2 of Siempre Bruja?

Slow your roll, people! Season 1 hasn’t even come out yet. As for a second season, it’s still early days and we expect the people at Netflix want to see how this series performs before ordering another batch of episodes.

So, if you’re so desperate for a second season, the best way to ensure that happens is by binge-watching when Siempre Bruja hits Netflix on February 1.

Teen Refuses To Talk To Mom Because She Sold Fallen Marine Dad’s Beloved Car, Or So He Thinks

Marine Sgt. Nick Walsh was so in love with his 1991 Ford Bronco that he vowed to pass it down to his own son one day. But those dreams were seemingly shattered.

In 2007, Sgt. Walsh was on deployment in Iraq when he was killed by sniper fire. He was only 26. His son, Triston, was just four years old at the time.

Though Triston’s mom kept the car, it began to fall apart as years passed by. Julie eventually took to Facebook to explain the situation and ask for some advice. Should she hold onto the car, knowing how much it meant to Triston and his late father, despite its totally unusable condition?

The community took note and it wasn’t long before local businesses, mechanics and dealerships were chipping in to restore the Bronco at no cost.

Triston, who was nearing his 16th birthday, had no clue what was to come. In fact, his mom told him she sold the Bronco (since it was such a clunker, anyway) and said she planned to use the money to buy him a different car instead — one that actually worked.

But the teen, who had gotten his hopes so high and desperately wanted to drive his dad’s car, was so angry and disappointed that he refused to speak to his mom for weeks! He knew that having this car would make him feel close to his father, the fallen hero who died way too early.

In this clip, watch as Triston’s mom brings him to the car dealership under false pretenses — and the curtain peels back to reveals his true birthday surprise.
