“Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored”, or “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored”, is a song by American recording artist Ariana Grande from her 2019 album Thank U, Next. Online, people have used the song title to caption images of pop culture examples of infidelity.
Origin
The song was announced along with several other song titles from the Thank U, Next album on January 22nd, 2019 on Grande’s Instagram. The following day, she posted a snippet of the song on Instagram, receiving more than 924,000 views and 344,000 likes in less than one month (shown below).
Several weeks later, on February 7th, Ariana Grande released a music video for the song “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” on YouTube. The post received more than 65 million views in about one week (shown below).
Spread
On February 8th, people began meme-ing both the video and creating image macros featuring the song title. For example, Twitter user @nolnfilm tweeted the title with a screenshot from the film Call Me By Your Name. The post received more than 12,000 retweets and 35,000 likes in one week (shown below, left).
Others used the title as phrasal template, replacing “I’m bored” with other humorous expressions, such as specifics from the American reality series The Jersey Shore, as posted by Twitter user @Gregggyboy. The post by @Gregggyboy received more than 19,000 retweets and 73,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).
On February 11th, Twitter user @TheRealKatPat tweeted, “break up with your girlfriend she’s cheating on you every Thursday in the projection room above the auditorium with Shane Oman.” The post received more than 56,000 retweets and 272,000 likes in four days (shown below).

In 2016, two attorneys met through work and fell in love. As their romantic relationship flourished, Brandon Dinetz and Jen Lettman turned to each other for help with their opening statements, a critical part of any lawyer’s courtroom performance.
So, when Brandon asked Jen to accompany him to his latest hearing, she was more than happy to attend. He told her it was crucial that she see this particular opening statement.
Unbeknownst to Jen, Brandon had spent the past five months creating and organizing a completely imaginary trial at the county courthouse in Palm Beach, Florida.
Brandon, a prosecutor, enlisted the help of an actual judge and defense attorney, and concocted the details surrounding a fabricated DUI case.
When the judge entered the room, she asked if the state and defense were ready to proceed with the case. “Bring in the jury,” she then instructed.
It wasn’t until Jen noticed one of the jurors looked just like Brandon’s dad that she began to realize what was actually happening. She noticed another juror looked just like her own sister, then quickly broke down in tears and stared back at Brandon in shock.
