Her Teenaged Daughter Wants Locks For Her Room. How Much Privacy Do Kids Deserve?

Privacy and teenagers can be a tough thing to balance. As parents, we know that they need and deserve some, but we also need to be able to see what they’re doing, where they are, and who they’re with if anything crops up that causes concern.

This woman’s daughter is 17 and struggling with invasions from her two younger brothers. She gives examples like turning her things upside down, bothering her while she’s trying to study, and even barging in while she’s trying to sleep.

My (43f) daughter Lara (17f) has been struggling to focus on her studies with her brothers Kyle (12m) and Ryan (9m) constantly disrespecting her privacy. A few days ago, she was yelling for Kyle to come to her room. I asked her what happened. She explained that Kyle flipped all her items upside down. I called Kyle to come and flip everything right side up.

Yesterday, Ryan was running into her room and kept stealing her stuff, while she ran to get them back. On the night of the same day, Lara was trying to sleep, when the brothers suddenly barged in and ran through it, resulting in her screaming at them to stay out and close the door while she was sleeping, to give a few examples.

After being woken in the middle of the night – and then chastised for screaming about it – the daughter has requested locks on her bedroom door.

Today in the morning, her father (48m) told her he didn’t like the way she was screaming. She said that she was trying to sleep and her brothers were making all kinds of ruckus.

He told her that they are kids and they will learn. She said that they will never learn and the only way for them to learn is to have locks installed for her room.

He did not want her to and they went back and forth on this until she threatened she would move out as soon as she became financially independent since she wasn’t going to wait for them to mature and they should already know to respect her privacy to which he said to wait to include me in the conversation.

Her mother doesn’t want to do it, citing a need to be able to make sure the daughter isn’t goofing off when she’s supposed to be studying, and claimed that she would “make sure” the boys stayed out of her room.

I overheard, and when she went to her room, I told her she wasn’t going to have locks set up because she already wastes her time without the need for locks and I don’t want her to fail. Lara said that they were never going to listen without them and I told her that I would make sure they wouldn’t enter her room.

A promise that turned out to be immediately hollow, as they ran in again. When she went to her mother as requested, her mother said she can’t complain because she sometimes naps in her brother’s room after school.

OP replied that it’s different because her brother isn’t using it and basically doesn’t unless it’s time to go to bed at night.

This evening, I heard her shouting for me. We were all in the living room. Her father explained what was going on. Lara said that she was making Kyle tea when he did he’s not allowed to do. She said that she was going to tell on them and he said that if she promises to not tell, he and Ryan will never go into her room again. She didn’t say anthing so they ran upstairs to her room.

I told her that she has no right to complain since she always sleeps in Kyle’s room after school.

Her brothers all agree and Lara calls all of us the worst, none of us are allowed in her room, and leaves. She comes back after a minute and says that she only sleeps in Kyle’s room because he never uses it aside from sleeping at night, and if he was to use it for studying, then she would never go there.

Meanwhile, they constantly disturb her, mess with her stuff, and made her unable to sleep just last night.

OP promised (again) to deal with it if they went in her room – a speech that was interrupted by the older boy saying he could go in there if he wanted to – and seemed surprised her daughter talked about dying to move out and away from the ruckus.

I told her if they ever go into her room, she needs to go to me. Then Kyle starts saying that they had the right to go into her room while she was trying to sleep because they were playing.

Lara yelled at him, then said that she couldn’t wait to move out soon so she no longer has to deal with them. She also called me an awful mother for not giving her her bedroom locks.

Should teenagers have locks on their doors? Reddit is swooping in with their opinions!

The top comment says that until OP actually does something to curb her sons’ behavior, locks may be the best and easiest solution.

While this person is confused about OP’s reasoning for not wanting the locks in the first place.

I hate all of this for the daughter, honestly.

If you live in a safe home with people who respect your privacy there should be no real reason for locks…but this is not that.

Las Vegas Shooter Lost Money, Mad At Casinos Before Mass Shooting

Just a few weeks before a man killed 60 people and injured more than 400 in the single deadliest mass shooting in the US, he lost $38,000 gambling at a Las Vegas casino, according to documents made public this week by the FBI.

The shooter would spend up to 18 hours a day gambling in casinos, according to the documents, often winning large sums.

According to the documents, casinos used to give high-earning gamblers like the shooter free penthouse suites, trips on cruises, and more incentives. About three years before the mass shooting, they stopped this practice and even banned the high-earners from gambling at their casinos. The shooter was banned from several Vegas casinos because of the money he won, according to the FBI documents.

“[The shooter] was very upset with the way casinos were treating him and other high rollers,” the document reads. It goes on to say that another gambler who knew the shooter said that he was also stressed about the treatment of “high rollers” and “believed the stress could easily be what caused [the shooter] to ‘snap.'”

The shooter opened fire out the window of his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay resort on Oct. 1, 2017, striking the crowd that had gathered for the last day of the 91 Harvest music festival. He killed himself in his hotel room about an hour after the massacre. Authorities said he acted alone, and in early 2019, the FBI concluded there was “no single or clear motivating factor” for the shooting.

The FBI’s 2019 report implied that the shooter was inspired by his father, who was also a high-stakes gambler as well as a bank robber and fugitive who was on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list in 1968.

However, investigators uncovered that the shooter’s bank accounts had dropped by roughly $1.5 million between September 2015 and September 2017, which “could have been a contributing factor,” Joe Lombardo, then the Clark County sheriff, said during a news conference in January 2019.

The 2019 investigation also revealed that he might have been planning on committing a mass shooting because in the year leading up to the massacre, he had purchased 55 firearms, mostly rifles, and searched on the internet for “Biggest open air concert venues in USA” and “How crowded does Santa Monica Beach get.”

The shooter’s doctor also told investigators that he might have had bipolar disorder, but he refused to take antidepressant medications.

“An interview with his doctor indicated signs of a troubled mind, but no troubling behavior that would trigger a call to law enforcement,” Lombardo said in 2019. “Without a manifesto, or even a note to answer questions, the totality of the information that has been gathered leaves us to only make an educated guess as to the motives of [the shooter].”

The FBI did not respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for additional comment.

Does Gabriela become a firefighter in ‘Fire Country’?

Even a blind man could see the budding romance between Gabriela and Bode … and the tension continues to boil over in Season 1, Episode 17 of Fire Country. Firefighting isn’t for the faint of heart and in “A Cry for Help,” Gabriela shares her fears that she may never complete her probationary training.

“I need to throw a ladder unassisted, it’s one of the skills I have to master to graduate from being a probie,” she explains to Bode in a sneak peek, adding that she has a long way to go before she’s ready to join the squad. “Look at all these blank boxes.”

But Gabriela’s doubts are met with words of encouragement. “Look at all the completed ones,” Bode adds.

She admits that she received the same advice from his father, who previously told her that her training could take up to two years. “Your dad said I should have patience and that it usually takes probies two years to check off all the boxes,” she says. “I told him that patience wasn’t what got me into the Olympics, it was practicing until my lungs got bruised.”

In the direction she’s headed, Gabriela may be trying to push the process a little too fast. Will she burn out before completing her training?

Aside from Gabriela internally struggling with the probationary process, the episode will also see the Cal Fire team pitted against one another.

Trump supporters deem indictment ‘Rubicon’ moment America won’t return from

Earlier today, a Manhattan grand jury took the unprecedented step of filing an indictment against former President Donald Trump. Although the exact charges are not yet officially known, numerous media reports indicate Trump is the first U.S. president to ever be formally charged with a crime.

The reactions online were myriad, from shock on the right to joy on the left, but in the moments after, a number of Trump supporters all settled on one thought. That America crossed a “Rubicon” it would never come back from.

The indictment stems from the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation into allegations Trump authorized a hush money payment to former adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. Trump could be charged with falsifying business records to cover up the exchange.

The crimes do not stem from his time in office, but many thought that his status as former commander-in-chief would protect him from any type of criminal prosecution.

A number of conservatives, believing this to be a politically motivated move to keep Trump down in advance of the 2024 presidential election, declared that America had crossed the Rubicon.

https://www.twitter.com/jason_howerton/status/1641554480553512962

“The political Rubicon has been crossed. There’s no going back from this,” wrote commentator Charlie Kirk.

“We’ve crossed the rubicon America is headed to a dark place,” wrote a staffer for Tim Pool.

On Truth Social, a verified user agreed.

“The rubicon has been crossed. A threshold that has never been crossed has just been crossed,” they wrote, quoting a broadcast about the indictment by John Solomon.

The Rubicon is an infamous metaphor relating back to ancient Rome when armies led by Julius Caesar refused to disband and marched toward Rome, which led to a Civil War on the Italian peninsula and Caesar being installed as a permanent dictator of the Roman empire.

In this metaphor it appears President Joe Biden—although he had nothing to do with this—is Caesar, who will now apparently become America’s dictator for life.

But as fraught as conservatives are over the indictment, Trump is currently being investigated in three other cases, meaning that there might still be a few more Rubicons still to be crossed.

‘WE GOTTA GATEKEEP THIS OR THEY’LL DELETE THIS OPTION’: Customer shares ‘hack’ for getting Cava for half off

There’s been no shortage of love for Cava on social media. Customers have praised the chain for its generous portions, and a Cava devotee recently went viral on TikTok after gushing about how a location gave her free food because they weren’t accepting cash and she didn’t bring her card with her.

Now, another TikToker is extolling Cava by highlighting her “hack” for getting two meals for one at the popular chain.

TikTok user Caroline Conneen (@carolineconneen) posted the viral video on Feb. 2. As of March 30, the video has over 159,000 views.

“This is my hack for anyone who loves Cava to get it for half off,” she says to start the clip.

“Unlike other bowl places, the toppings are pretty much unlimited. Like, they’ll let you get as many as you want, so I got all brown rice, I doubled up for free on all of the toppings, and then the only thing I pay extra for is I double the protein so that I have two proteins,” she explains.

Conneen says that if the workers “do it right,” customers should receive a “huge” bowl when using this hack. She then scoops half of her Cava bowl’s contents into an empty bowl from her home.

“You’re getting two very legit portions here,” she says while showing the contents of both bowls. “Then, I just add my own greens, and now we have lunch, and now we also have lunch for tomorrow.”

@carolineconneen I do this when I get it delivered:) @cava is worth every penny in my opinion though fav lunch place ever #healthyeating #healthylifestyle ♬ original sound – Trueee

In the comments section, many viewers appreciated Conneen’s hack. Some even said they already use the practice at Cava and similar restaurants.

“I do this too and sauce on the side so it’s not soggy!!” one viewer wrote.

“I do the EXACT same but I eat more than half I double everything and add my own rice,” a second said.

“I do this with chipotle but get the toppings on the side so I can reheat the rice + protein/ cheese and keep the veggies/ salsa cold,” another added.

However, one TikToker’s remark suggests that Cava’s portion generosity may be location specific.

“We eat regularly at Cava, but one location near us barely put anything in it,” they wrote.

Luckily, Conneen’s hack is not the only way to save money at Cava. One TikToker shared that to get their money’s worth, they “just get the kids meal.”

The Daily Dot contacted Conneen via Instagram direct message and Cava via email for further comment.

Where to Get the ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ Popcorn Bucket

Callie (Carlos) Cadorniga - Author

The new Dungeons & Dragons movie may just be one of the most interesting pop culture oddities of 2023 so far, second only to Hi-Fi Rush being announced and released on the same day to critical acclaim.

Based on the popular and long-running fantasy-based tabletop RPG, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has received stellar marks among critics. It’s earned an 89 percent critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a 94 percent audience score.

Article continues below advertisement

That’s certainly unexpected for a live-action adaptation of a game that, for all intents and purposes, has no plot except for what individual players make of it. Against all odds, though, the film seems to have rolled a Nat-20 among critics and audiences ahead of its wide theatrical release.

If you’re a DnD fan looking to check out the film for yourself, then you may want to hit up AMC Theaters for a chance to pick up specially themed merch. Here’s where to pick up a Dungeons & Dragons popcorn bucket.

A fan with the 'Dungeons & Dragons' popcorn bucket

Want to know where to get a ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ popcorn bucket? Keep reading to find out.

To celebrate the theatrical release of Honor Among Thieves, AMC Theatres is rolling out exclusive DnD-themed merch that you can pick up at participating locations. These include medieval mugs, shirts, and a giant popcorn bucket.

But this is nothing like the themed tin buckets that you might have picked up for other movies. This plastic DnD popcorn bucket is in the shape of a 20-sided die, similar to what you would find in your average dice set for regular DnD games.

The bucket has rustic medieval etchings and actually features 20 labeled sides, capped off with a hinged lid that you can open and close.

For all intents and purposes, this oversized D20 is more than usable during your next campaign if you really want to make a statement with your game nights. Either way, you can pick one up at one of several locations. Click here for a full list of AMC theaters that are offering the bucket, organized by state. Be wary, because supplies may not last.

The bucket itself is $34.99, which is roughly what you might spend on movie theater snacks in the first place. If you’re a DnD superfan who’s got the dough to spare, you can ask the theater workers if they have any available.

Not only would this be a perfect talking point for your campaign, but it’s also highly appropriate for watching Honor Among Thieves. The DnD film follows Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine), a charming thief who teams up with a ragtag group of adventurers in order to pull off an epic heist and retrieve an ancient relic.

Ready to set off on a new adventure? Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes out in theaters on March 31.

People Are Loving That Disney Slipped A Clause Involving King Charles III Into Their DeSantis Agreement That Blocks Him From Ever Taking Over Their Land

On Wednesday, a gang of Ron DeSantis cronies were in for a rude awakening. The quintet who were set to take over Disney’s Florida land held their first meeting, which is when they learned that an agreement found a way to strip them of any real power. It was a brilliant case of checkmate by Disney honcho Bob Iger and his legal team. But maybe the funniest aspect was buried deep in the document.

As per the BBC, lawyers for Disney and the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which had up till this week served as the governing district of Disney’s Florida property, had found a way to circumvent DeSantis, who was enraged that the company didn’t hate LGBTQIA+ people. They signed an agreement that greatly reduced their power, handing it over to Disney instead.

But that’s not all they did. Surely recognizing that DeSantis and team could seize power later down the line, they added a clause that would keep their mitts off the company for…well, for forever. The clause stated that the declaration will last until “twenty one (21) years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III.”

King Charles III is still spry in his mid-70s, but the agreement doesn’t last until his death. It lasts until the “last survivor of the descendants” of the soon-to-be-coronated king. Even the relatively young DeSantis won’t be around then.

The clause — an extra eff-you to the governor who retaliated against the company — produced a lot of gasps on social media.

There was also some confusion about the clause’s language. Did it mean Charles III’s immediate descendants?

Or did it mean all of his descendants. If so, that would be a while.

Anyway, when Iger and team made a fool of Ron DeSantis, it was huge Florida news. Few imagined it would be eclipsed by the state’s most famous resident getting indicted.

E3 2023 Is Cancelled Leaving Its Future In Doubt

Every year, during the summer months, there are a series of presentations where some of the biggest producers in all of gaming announce upcoming titles, new releases, and more all to the excitement of fans. This period of time has always been associated with the trade show, E3, but over the last few years E3 has struggled to remain relevant as complications from COVID, internal issues, and questions about if E3 should even exist have plagued it. Despite this, the organization running E3 known as the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has been adamant that it will continue on and would have a presentation in 2023. This will not happen.

E3 2023 has been cancelled as first reported by IGN’s Rebekah Valentine. Sometime Thursday, the ESA announced to its shareholders that an event in 2023 would not be happening. This follows months of announcements from some of gaming’s biggest companies, such as Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Ubisoft announcing that it would not have a presence of any kind at whatever event E3 was planning to host.

Two sources have confirmed to IGN that the organization announced the cancellation via an email sent out to its members today. The email said that while E3 “remains a beloved event and brand” that the 2023 version “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

With yet another cancellation to E3, many are wondering if this is it for the longtime event. Many companies no longer see value in purchasing an expensive physical booth at the Los Angeles convention center when they can do a better job reaching out to fans, media, and shareholders on their own through digital events like Nintendo Direct, or PlayStation’s State of Play. There are even competing showcase events like Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest.

If this really is it for E3, it will leave behind a complicated legacy. Many journalists speak highly of what it did for their careers, and fans have always loved having a week dedicated to the celebration of video games, but E3’s inability to evolve with the changing times may have finally doomed it for good.
