‘This is the FIRST I have heard this!’: Woman warns against mulch after it ‘spontaneously’ catches fire, causes tragedy

Woman warns against mulch after it ‘spontaneously’ catches fire, causes tragedy

In a heart-wrenching series of TikTok videos viewed over 5 million times, Vashti (@revivedbyvashti) shares a personal tragedy to spotlight a lesser-known danger lurking in homes and gardens across the country: Spontaneous combustion from mulch.

Through her story, where a nephew died in a fire and another had serious burn injuries, Vashti underscores the importance of carefully handling staining rags and mulch to prevent catastrophic fires.

“This is my sister and nephews, and this is our reality,” Vashti begins, drawing a parallel between the tragic fire ignited by mulch at her family’s home and the similar risk posed by improperly managed staining rags.

“Although this fire did not start from staining rags, it is very similar,” she explains, detailing how the fire began in the mulch before spreading to the front porch, where it intensified after reaching a propane tank. Her message is clear: “This might save a life.”

Another was thankful for the video: “This is the FIRST I have heard this!!!”

“So heat is not even needed in this case?” asked one person. “I’m guessing since it started at midnight. That’s so crazy.”

A person replied, “It’s the same with resin/epoxy. I used to work in a fiberglass shop; our cups of resin would catch fire constantly.”

Vashti elaborates on the chemical process that makes mulch a fire hazard, stating, “Your mulch is colored with staining agents, and what happens is, as that stain is oxidizing, if it gets trapped with oxygen, if the weather conditions are just right, it can actually create a fire.”

She emphasizes the similarity to the danger staining rags pose when left in piles, as they, too, can spontaneously combust under certain conditions.

In response to overwhelming feedback from her initial video, Vashti further educates her audience on spontaneous combustion in mulch and other organic materials like wood chips and compost piles. “As these organic materials break down and decompose, oxidation occurs, and this process is what generates the heat,” she explains, adding that certain weather conditions can exacerbate this effect, leading to fire.

Vashti’s poignant message is supported by the National Fire Protection Association and Home & Gardens, highlighting the dangers of improperly managed mulch and staining rags. According to these sources, the heat generated by the oxidation process in mulch can lead to ignition, especially when the material is compacted or piled up too thickly. Similarly, staining rags should never be left in a pile; instead, they should be spread out to dry away from buildings and then stored in a metal container with a water and detergent solution to break down the oils.

One person asked, “So this won’t happen with a water-based stain?” She replied, “Correct. They don’t have flammable oils. Water is the solvent, so they won’t spontaneously combust.”

Through her videos, Vashti shares her personal loss and offers practical advice on preventing such tragedies. She urges her viewers to properly manage staining rags by laying them flat to dry and disposing of them safely in airtight containers. She also advises researching mulch alternatives and proper care if mulch is used to mitigate the risk of spontaneous combustion.

A commenter in one of her videos said, “My friend’s house burned down because of a staining rag when they were remodeling! I had never heard anyone else talk about it! This is important!”

Vashti’s heartfelt campaign to raise awareness about the hazards of mulch and staining rags is a crucial reminder of the importance of safety precautions in everyday activities. Her message, propelled by the tragic loss of her nephew, resonates with millions, potentially saving lives by highlighting the risks of spontaneous combustion associated with seemingly innocuous household and gardening materials.

Even Luka Doncic Couldn’t Believe He Made A 20-Foot Scoop Shot Against The Rockets

luka scoop
AT&T Sportsnet

Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have been on a heater of late, winning six in a row and nine of their last 10 coming into Sunday’s game against the only team in the league with a longer win streak: the Houston Rockets.

Even with Houston’s incredible form of late, they were no match for Doncic and the Rockets, as Luka went off for another monster night, scoring 47 points on 18-of-28 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Doncic had it all working and even when Houston put together a good defensive possession, it wasn’t enough to keep Luka from scoring.

In the early third quarter, Doncic found himself in trouble after picking up his dribble against Jabari Smith Jr. with the shot clock winding down. The Houston forward crowded him to take away any chance to get up a jump shot, so he instead stepped through under Smith’s arm and put up a scooping 20-footer that found nothing but net to the dismay of the Rockets (and the delight of Doncic).

No one has more fun clowning an opponent than Doncic, as he couldn’t help but wear a big smile as he jogged back down the court, laughing at his own absurd shot-making. What’s wild is it may not be the most impressive make of the night from Doncic, as he ended his pregame warmups by banking a shot off the Jumbotron and into the basket.

Between Doncic and Kyrie Irving — who authored the most incredible game-winner of the year against Denver — Dallas has the market cornered on guards that can make preposterous shots. As the playoffs get closer, they also might be one of the more dangerous teams in the West.

Nikola Jokic Confirmed He’s A Big DJ Burns Fan: ‘He’s Amazing’

DJ Burns has taken the basketball world by storm, as the big man from NC State has captured the hearts of fans around the country during the Wolfpack’s unbelievable run to the Final Four.

On Sunday, Burns put forth his most impressive performance to date, scoring 29 points to lead all scorers and beat rival Duke to punch NC State’s ticket to Glendale. His ability to control the game has been sensational, as he orchestrates the Wolfpack’s offense when he’s on the floor, as they run almost everything through the big fella. The Blue Devils looked to turn him into a scorer, rather than a facilitator, and he obliged by putting Duke’s bigs in the blender, hitting them with dropsteps, turnarounds, teardrops, and more.

There aren’t many comps for Burns, as his combination of size and skill is incredibly unique, but one player he shares some similarities to is Nikola Jokic in the way NC State runs the offense through him as their lead playmaker. On Sunday, the Nuggets lit up the Cavaliers in Denver and Jokic was a bit tardy for his press conference because he was too busy marveling at Burns’ second-half performance against Duke.

Once Jokic arrived at the podium, he had some high praise for Burns, saying he’s “amazing” and talking about how much he loves his game.

It makes sense that Jokic would love watching Burns play, given there’s some of Jokic’s game in Burns’ skillset, and you can tell the thing that stands out most to Jokic is the way the rest of the NC State team seems to feed off of the big man.

Husband Only Worries About Himself For Dinner, So When His Wife Wants Some Of His Food… He Ends Up Hungry And Punished

Source: Reddit/AITA, PexelsSource: Reddit/AITA, Pexels

Age old battle of stay at home mom vs work in office dad.

This man took to Reddit to share his story.

I’m sitting here half annoyed half confused how to feel. Here is my situation:

My wife did not work today. She has been hanging with the kids all day.

After work, the husband went to exercise.

I got home from work at 530 and did a turn and burn to jujitsu class.

Dinner was not discussed but since I was getting home at 830 from I assumed I was on my own for dinner.

Once he returns home, he makes himself dinner.

I get back at 830 absolutely starving and exhausted. I had been planning my dinner all day: poor man’s sushi (it’s just canned tuna, rice wrapped in seaweed).

I write down everything I eat in a food log and had planned this dinner in advance. I had the exact amount of rice and only two sheets of seaweed.

As he gets ready to eat, the wife is taking care of the kids.

I get home and my wife and kids are in the bathroom taking a bath so I get to work on my sushi. I have the entire thing written down and I’m ready to feast.

I’m giddy with excitement sitting down at the table. All the sudden my wife comes out and into the kitchen and says “can I have half of that? Me and the kids went out for a late lunch and I haven’t eaten.”

The husband does not want to share his food.

I pause. Obviously not happy with this news.

I don’t want to share but I also acknowledge that hogging down all the food would be selfish.

So she notices the pause and goes “fine, I guess I’ll just figure something out” in a pissy tone.

I go “no no no we can split it.” And give her half.

The wife is upset with the husband.

I go on to explain my situation but I don’t think she cared. She was annoyed that I even paused.

Now I only had half my dinner and am still hungry.

The husband is having an internal dilemma.

I can’t imagine asking for half of someone’s food as they are just sitting down to eat. But I also can’t imagine not sharing it.

I can’t decide how to feel.

Reddit users were not happy with the writer on this one, but it was really one sentence that got him the guilty verdict.

One person had a kind approach, telling him to try to see it from his wife’s perspective.

Another reader had a shorter fuse with the writer for implying that staying home with the kids is easy.

This person managed to fall somewhere between the two other comments.

830 is pretty late for everybody to be eating.

She really could have cut him some slack.

If you thought that was an interesting story, check out what happened when a family gave their in-laws a free place to stay in exchange for babysitting, but things changed when they don’t hold up their end of the bargain.
