Comedy podcast forced to take down ‘AI’ George Carlin special

The estate of George Carlin settled a copyright violation suit against the comedy podcast Dudesy on Tuesday after the podcast agreed to take a video down from their YouTube channel and remove “all known mention of George Carlin [from] Dudesy’s social media accounts.”

The podcast had been under fire for releasing an allegedly AI-generated, hour-long stand-up of Carlin, a famously ribald comedian who passed away in 2008.

Carlin’s daughter Kelly Carlin slammed the mocked-up Carlin “special” in January when the Dudesy podcast released the video, which was titled “George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead.”

The allegedly AI-generated special, which mimicked George Carlin’s voice serviceably and his style superficially, was then sued by George Carlin’s estate for copyright infringement.

“My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain, and imagination,” Kelly Carlin said in a statement. “No machine will ever replicate his genius.”

According to the suit, Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen, who are behind the Dudesy podcast, profited from using what they claimed was Carlin’s likeness and style.

The entire premise of the Dudesy podcast is that it’s written by an AI called Dudesy which has access to all of the host’s data and correspondence.

But after Carlin’s estate sued the podcast, a spokeswoman for Sasso told the New York Times that Dudesy didn’t actually exist and was just a fictional character created by the hosts.

“The YouTube video ‘I’m Glad I’m Dead’ was completely written by Chad Kultgen,” the spokeswoman said, but didn’t confirm whether Carlin’s voice in the video was AI-generated.

After that admission—which lawyers for the Carlin estate said they’d determine the truth of in court—the podcasters barely defended themselves against the lawsuit, telling the Carlin estate within a week of the case being filed that they’d taken down the video and social media content promoting the special.

On April 1, according to a court filing, the podcasters reached a settlement with the Carlin estate. The complaint for the lawsuit asked for a variety of damages including any profit they made off the videos and attorneys’ fees, but didn’t specify what the terms of the settlement are.

According to a proposed order, any third-party copies of the Carlin special uploaded anywhere on the internet will also violate the court’s ruling, though the Dudesy podcasters won’t be liable for them.

His Daughter’s Girlfriend Called Him Creepy In Front Of Her Friends, So He Decided Not To Give Her Any More Rides

Source: Reddit/AITA/Unsplash/@buduczkiSource: Reddit/AITA/Unsplash/@buduczki

When people date folks with kids, there’s always bound to be some tension.

And this story from Reddit’s “Am I the *******?” page has a whole lot of it!

Was this guy out of line for how he treated his girlfriend’s daughter?

Let’s see what he had to say.

“I’m 37, and I’ve been in a relationship with a mid-40s woman (Amy, she doesn’t want to tell me her specific age, which I don’t mind) for about a year. She has a 17-year-old daughter I’ll call Jess.

Over the weekend, Jess had a school event and had asked me for a ride in advance. I didn’t mind in the slightest. I drove her over to the school and we had a nice chat in the car.

Then she insulted him.

When she got out though, a bunch of her friends were there, and she waved to me and shouted “Later creepy stepdad!” with a huge smile.

I think it was a joke to her friends? They laughed and I stared awkwardly for a few seconds. Then Jess said “Go, go!” literally shooing me away.

This hurt his feelings.

I drove home thinking whatever, but over time it started to really grate on me. I know that she wanted to just show off for them, but I didn’t want to be stuck in a car with a girl who considered me creepy in any way. I shot her a text around that time that she would have to find another way to get home.

She didn’t see my text for some time, but a few hours later she called me asking for a ride. I told her that I couldn’t do that as I had had a couple of drinks (which was true). Then she half hung up on me and apparently called her mother.

Amy was busy working on something at the time, and told me that I needed to get over there and pick her up. I responded that she could walk, get a ride from her friends, or take public transportation.

What’s the big deal?

It was 8pm in one of the safest cities in our country and that she was going to be fine. Amy then walked away, grabbed my keys, and drove off in my car, despite having a suspended license.

About 15 minutes later Amy came home and shrieked at me about my treatment of Jess while Jess evacuated to her room. I told her that she really shouldn’t be driving without a suspended license, and Amy said she wouldn’t have to if I were more responsible.

When I reminded her of why her license was suspended she got furious (it’s a pretty touchy subject) and told me she’d leave if she had anywhere else to go. I brushed her off with a lame “that sounds like a you problem” and we haven’t talked since.

AITA here?”

Here’s how folks responded.

Mom Complains About Crowds Bumping Her Baby At A Rave

In response to the criticism, the mom said: “For all y’all that want to clown [on my post], go do something else with your lives. Seriously, if you have to sit here and drag on some ridiculous drama that I’ve MOVED ON FROM, then you all can, too.”

“Go find someone else to judge and criticize for their choices. Seriously, if this is entertaining for you, you’re focussing on the wrong things. My family is happy and healthy and honestly all this unnecessary toxicity has turned me away from the rave community.”

‘Predatory Use Of AI’ In Music Is The Target Of A New Open Letter Signed By Billie Eilish, Noah Kahan, Metro Boomin, And More

Ameca Robot AI Artificial Intelligence 2024

AI has become a hot-button topic in creative communities and beyond since consumer-level tools have become widespread over the past few years. Some feel it could threaten the livelihoods of artists, and now some recognizable names have signed an open letter from Artist Rights Alliance that aims to curb or prevent irresponsible use of these technologies.

Those who signed include Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Noah Kahan, Metro Boomin, Katy Perry, J Balvin, Zayn Malik, Camila Cabello, Jonas Brothers, d4vd, Doechii, and Kacey Musgraves, among others.

The letter begins, “We, the undersigned members of the artist and songwriting communities, call on Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to cease the use of artificial intelligence (Al) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” It then considers both sides of the AI situation, saying, “Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, Al has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere. Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing Al to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders.”

It goes on from there before concluding, “We call on all Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy Al music-generation technology, content or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

Find the full letter and list of people who signed it below.

“We, the undersigned members of the artist and songwriting communities, call on Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to cease the use of artificial intelligence (Al) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.

Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, Al has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere.

Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing Al to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders.

When used irresponsibly, Al poses enormous threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music and our livelihoods. Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train Al models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of Al-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists. For many working musicians, artists, and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic.

Unchecked, Al will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work and prevent us from being fairly compensated for it.

This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of Al to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.

We call on all Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy Al music-generation technology, content, or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

She Was Pregnant When He Cheated, But Her Revenge Was A Labor Of Love

Source: Reddit/AITA/ShutterstockSource: Reddit/AITA/Shutterstock

There really is no excuse for cheating, at least in my opinion.

If your partner is pregnant and gestating your child and you cheat? Nah. You deserve absolutely anything that happens to you.

OP learned her husband was cheating on her.

My ex husband used to pick fights with me so he could leave every single weekend and cheat on me. It took me months to catch on completely what was happening.

Earlier in the week if one particularly argumentative week, we went and bought him an all new wardrobe. He has recently lost a great deal of weight and nothing fit him.

Being the good wife that I am, I placed all his brand new clothes into the dresser after laundering them.

Friday night fight night happened and he was gone. I received a call about his whereabouts and what he was doing.

She called the bar, the police, and then proceeded to ruin everything in his dresser.

So first, I call the police and inform them that there is a completely illegal car (no inspection, insurance or licensed driver) about to leave said bar he was at and I was very concerned due to his heavy drinking about him being on the road.

I then called the bar and explained that I was in labor (9 months pregnant at the time but not in labor) and my husband needed to come home immediately.

While on the phone, I got all of his brand new clothes out. I cut the toes and heels out of every sock, the crotch out of all his boxers, the armpits out of his shirts and made them into belly shirts, and cut his jeans straight up the pant legs to the pockets.

I then proceeded to fold them all nicely and placed them back into the drawer.

She also moved out.

The next morning, after my father in law picked him up from the drunk tank, I had already moved the majority of my belongings out of the house and he went to take a shower.

Savage.

The loving wife I am gave him a set of new clothes to put on and waited for him to discover his new look.

Best fit check I’ve ever witnessed!

Just saying, don’t mess with a hormonal, scorned woman.

Reddit has definitely got to be on her side with this one.

So many gross pregnancy stats.

‘I was disgusted and horrified’: Female tattoo artist shares red flags women should watch for in their male tattoo artist

Woman talking(l+r), Tattooing flower(c)

A tattoo artist’s PSA for women who get tattooed by men has gone viral online.

In a TikTok video that has racked up over 59,000 views, user McKynzie (@ever.inktattooo) shared the red flags women should watch out for when getting work done by male tattoo artists.

“I spend all day tattooing women and girls and the amount of horror stories I hear from them about being tattooed by men, in your traditional tattoo shops, is insane,” she began in the clip.

McKynzie prefaced the tattooing horror stories by explaining not all “traditional” tattoo parlors are problematic.

“I have been tattooed at traditional tattoo shops, and I’m not saying that all of them are bad or all of them are scary,” she said. “Or every male tattoo artist is gonna take advantage of you.”

Still, she believes women should be on the lookout for several red flags whenever they decide to get inked by men.

“No. 1 is if they insist to take you to a private room,” she said.

McKynzie explained there is a particular tattoo shop where an artist insists on taking young women to a private room. Allegedly, several women complained that artist behaved inappropriately with them in the past. She stressed getting work done in a private room isn’t necessarily bad, but the artist should always respect boundaries like keeping the door open.

Another red flag the TikToker said customers should watch out for is if the artist makes fun of your design.

”This happened several times to me in a traditional tattoo studio,” she continued.

McKynzie explained that women who go to traditional studios encounter negativity if they desire designs they found on Pinterest.

”They may poke fun at it, laugh about it, scoff at it or be rude about doing a Pinterest or basic or girly design,” she explained.

She believes that tattoo artists who don’t love a design won’t do their best. Ultimately, a customer may walk away with work that they don’t love.

Lastly, she warned about male artists who tell inappropriate jokes.

”If they are doing that, that I’d a huge red flag and probably not someone you want in your personal space,” she said.

@ever.inktattoo stay safe ladies!!🫶💗 #redflags #tattooredflags #finelinetattoo #finelinetattooartist #tattoosforwomen #trampstamps #tattoosafty #tattoohorrorstory #womensafety #girlytok #girlytattoos #fy #viral #femaletattooartist #womentattooers #smalltattoo #tinytattoo #tattooideasforgirls #greenscreen ♬ original sound – McKynzie

In the comments section, other ladies shared their own negative experiences with male tattoo artists.

“The man who secretly recorded when I had a shoulder done,” user @owlandtwine commented.

“I’ve walked into a tattoo shop shop for an estimate once. He was asleep on the couch??? And said ‘yea I’ve never drawn that. It may look good. It might not. We can see’ … like SIR NO,” another said.

Others shared more positive takes and experiences.

“My male tattooer was nicer about my pinterest tattoo than I was,” user @et_phn_bmw said. “I immediately started roasting it before he could and he was so kind and recognized that it meant a lot to me and my mom.”

“I never realized how lucky I got w my tattoo artist,” another person named Mallory wrote. “He’s been married for like 20+ years and is obsessed w his wife lol.”

The Daily Dot has previously reported on McKynzie’s popular tattoo-related content. She previously shared that she no longer accepts male clients after several scary incidents. That video racked up over 1 million views and earned praise from women who saw it.

‘Draconian’: The GOP-led Tennessee House slashed the board of the state’s only public HBCU

TN leg vacates board of HBCU

In each edition of web_crawlr we have exclusive original content every day. On Tuesdays our Senior Reporter Tricia Crimmins explains the legislation that is captivating the internet in her “Digital Democracy” column.  If you want to read columns like this before everyone else, subscribe to web_crawlr to get your daily scoop of internet culture delivered straight to your inbox.

The Bill:

Tennessee House bill 1739 (also known as TN Senate bill 1596) was signed into law by Governor Bill Lee (R) last Thursday. The legislation vacated the board of Tennessee State University, the state’s only public historically Black college or university, after a financial audit of the University found that it increased its scholarships by 250% between 2019 and 2023. The audit did not find any fraud.

The bill also granted Governor Lee the power to appoint an entirely new Board, which he did over the weekend. All eight members of the revamped Board are graduates of TSU.

The Backlash:

As the financial audit of TSU didn’t unearth any malfeasance, many said the GOP-led legislature’s sweeping overhaul of the University’s board was an overreach. In a statement from TSU itself, the University called the bill “unprecedented, unfortunate, and uncharted waters.”

“We believe this legislation will disrupt our students’ educational pursuits, harm the image of the University,” the Tennessean reported. “And remove a Board that had achieved success in its enhanced governance of TSU.”

Tennessee House member Justin J. Pearson (D) wrote on X the board vacation was an “authoritarian and draconian [effort]” from his GOP colleagues, and that Tennessee Democratic legislators must “resist and persist.”

Pearson made headlines alongside his House colleague Justin Jones (D) for being expelled from the state legislature after protesting a vote for gun safety. Both won their seats back in special elections.

The Background:

A 2006 National Center for Education Statistics report found TSU has been underfunded by $2.1 billion over the last 30 years. Governor Lee was made aware of the discrepancy in a 2023 letter to him from the Departments of Agriculture and Education.

And the discrepancy angered TSU graduate Ramona Willis, who was disappointed by the board vacation.

“They hold back billions of dollars from the school, but yet they want to remove the board?” she told NBC. “Could some issues be because we just didn’t have enough money, money that is just sitting out there that should be ours?”
