Indie Mixtape 20: gglum Gets Off To A Scorching Start On ‘The Garden Dream’

gglum 2024

Secretly Canadian has been a tastemaking label for years now. So, when they sign a new artist, you should probably pay attention. On that front, one of the latest additions to their roster is gglum, who Secretly welcomed aboard in late 2023.

gglum, a pseudonym for London-born songwriter Ella Smoker, didn’t waste any time making herself comfortable and dropped her debut album, The Garden Dream, a few days ago. It’s a vulnerable project that sees a now-content Smoker looking back at her sometimes-less-than-stellar early days, through the lenses of styles like serene indie-folk, lo-fi rock, and more.

To celebrate the milestone release, Uproxx caught up gglum to discuss a potpourri of topics, everything from Britney Spears to pressing flowers to the importance of good posture. Check it all out in the latest Indie Mixtape Q&A, below.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Blue. Nylon Strings. Glum.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

I would want be a niche lost artist that a cult following of teenagers from 2050 discover and can bond over. They’ll say things like “I was born in the wrong era” and wear baggy jeans and Air Forces and bum bags.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

Phil Elverum. He was the person that made me realize I could write music in whatever way I wanted to.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

At Sketch in Oxford Circus. The restaurant with those egg toilets? I went for a signing celebration meal with my managers and it was the fanciest place I’d ever been. And the food was insane, I left thinking everything I could ever eat after that experience would taste like cardboard.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

My friends are in a band called Something In The Lake and they played a gig when we were in college at The Bread And Roses in Clapham, when they were called Helve. My favourite gigs are always when I get to watch my friends play, the energy in the room is always so much more exciting when it’s someone you know and you’re proud of.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

“All I Need” by Radiohead. It’s quite an obvious choice, but it’s well known for a reason. Listening to it feels like Thom Yorke has broken into your home and is personally ripping your heart from your chest.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

How to press flowers. When I was a kid in Finland I’d always have a look inside the books in a family members house to find pressed flowers between the pages. I’ve been needing a hobby so I thought I’d give it a go.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

I’ve never crashed anywhere particularly weird but I did have a nap in the back room of a pub in Bristol on tour once about 30 minutes before the show started.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

The best place I’ve performed so far is Cologne. The crowds there are so energetic and get really involved which I feel is rare. I’d really like to perform in New York. I’ve had a bunch of friends go on tour in America and they said that the crowds in New York are really fun to play to.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Sort out your posture. It only gets worse and now it gives you headaches. Strengthen up them back muscles, it’ll make you look taller.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I make really good buffalo wings in the oven and they come out crispy and everything.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

My first thought is a local food bank. So many people need them and I feel like not enough people support them. They’re so important.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of five artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

Alex G, Radiohead, Paramore, King Krule, Thundercat. Somewhere pretty, like in the middle of some mountains in Greece haha.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

I have a tattoo on my arm that says Sunday. On the day I got it I wanted to be really reckless or ruin my life or something and decided a better idea would be to get a tattoo to fill the impulsive void. I didn’t have any ideas for what I particularly wanted so I just got the word Sunday because I like Sundays. It’s funny because a few months later someone I know got really drunk and got an almost identical “Sunday” tattoo so now I’ve got an accidental matching tattoo with them.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Panicking, jumping around and getting my band to stop me from running away. I get really nervous before gigs so I haven’t quite managed a proper pre-show routine, its mostly just me trying to chill out.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Britney Spears. Although I’m not sure if I wanted to be with her or be her.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

I would take my flatmates with me to a villa with a pool or something in maybe Greece or Spain or Italy. Actually Italy would be great! I love history so it would be super cool to see the Coliseum or Pompeii or something like that.

What is your biggest fear?

My fun formative years catching up with me health-wise. I used to think it would be worth it but now I’m thinking maybe not…..

‘I got fired for that’: Worker calls out boss for firing her by kicking her out of their GroupMe

Woman talking(l+r), Groupme app on phone(c)

A Shred415 fitness trainer posted a viral video saying she was fired for calling out sick. The owner reportedly fired her by kicking her out of their GroupMe.

Allie (@asay629) has reached over 1.5 million views and 182,000 likes on her TikTok by Wednesday. She captioned her video, “I’ve called out twice total during my whole employment, anyways, have the day you deserve Scott!”

To begin, Allie says the day before making her video, she had to call out sick from her fitness teaching job because she had a fever. “Like, to the point where it got to 103, and my boyfriend had to leave work and take me to urgent care,” she says. “It was really bad.”

“So, um, yeah, I got fired for that,” Allie adds.

Next, Allie explains she had sent a picture of the thermometer reading 101 to her work GroupMe and asked if anyone could cover her shift.

“The owner just said, ‘Goodbye, Allie,’ and then kicked me out of GroupMe,” she says.

Then, Allie shows a screenshot of the GroupMe conversation she had with the owner, Scott.

In the photo, Allie sent a picture of her thermometer reading 101.5 around 10 a.m. and said, “I currently have a fever and an ear infection … can someone please cover my class tonight.”

In an immediate response, Scott, the owner, says, “I have a headache, sorry, can’t do it.”

About 40 minutes later, Scott wrote again in the GroupMe, “Good bye, Allie,” and then reportedly removed her from the chat.

“So, yeah,” Allie says, “Shred415 Alpharetta, you’re awesome.”

Viewers in the comments section tried to help Allie with the next steps to take regarding her employment.

One commenter asked Allie, “Is that not illegal?”

“Been in HR for 10 years. At will employment is not as cut and dry as it seems. Reach out to an employment lawyer,” another said.

Allie posted a video in response to comments like these.

In her video, Allie says, “I’m not trying to sue; I’m not trying to get my bag; I can’t file for unemployment; I have another job.”

“I was just exposing the practices of that specific location,” she adds.

In the caption of her video, Allie says, “GA is an at will state so it is legal, but moreover was just exposing how this specific location runs their business. No hate to the other shreds.”

@asay629 Replying to @kara ♬ original sound – Allie

Another viewer in the comments section told Allie, “At will requires a write up or warning! You might have another job but they’re probably going to continue breaking the law with other employees who may not unless they receive repercussions.”

According to an Atlanta-based law firm, “An employee has the right to sue an employer for damages if he can prove that he has been illegally terminated. Georgia is an at-will employment state, meaning that an employee can be fired for any reason except an illegal one.”

The firm states that types of wrongful termination include “Discrimination, Breach of Contract, Family or Medical Leave, and Retaliation.”

In an Instagram direct message exchange with the Daily Dot, Allie reiterated the point she made in her caption, which was that it was only her second time calling out.

“I had no warning or convo with the owner, a lot of people think I must’ve been calling out on the reg but it wasn’t the case at all,” she said. “And that was 8 hours before my class before I had a chance to get to the dr i was just trying to get it covered asap.”

‘How did that work in 2016?’: Stephen A. Smith lays into Hillary Clinton’s ‘get over’ it message to voters upset about Biden-Trump rematch

Hillary Clinton(l), Stephen A Smith(r)

Sports journalist and personality Stephen A. Smith went viral after criticizing recent remarks by Hillary Clinton that voters dissatisfied with a Biden-Trump matchup in this year’s presidential election should “get over” themselves.

“I don’t think it was a very wise statement on her part,” Smith said on CNN’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip. “How did that work out for her in 2016?”

“You can look at her not campaigning in Wisconsin in the last days, not campaigning in Pennsylvania in the last days. You can look at some of the stuff that they were saying about her that sort of distracted things from where it should have been in terms of Comey and his report from the FBI,” Smith said. “You can bring up a whole bunch of things, but at the end of the day the last thing you need to do is to do anything that could agitate a potential voter in this particular election.”

Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to former President Donald Trump, was a guest on The Tonight Show on Monday night, where Fallon asked her what she’d say to voters who are upset that the contest is between President Joe Biden and Trump.

“Get over yourself, those are choices,” Clinton answered.

“Yeah, love that!” Fallon said while the audience cheered and applauded.

Clinton then explained her opinion: that one of the candidates, Biden, is old, effective, compassionate, has a heart, and really cares about people, while the other, Trump, is old and has been charged with 91 felonies.

“I don’t understand why this is even a hard choice, really, I don’t understand it,” Clinton said. “But we have to go through the election and hopefully people will realize what’s at stake because it’s an existential question, what kind of country we’re going to have, what kind of democracy we’re going to have, and people who blow that off aren’t paying attention.”

Smith told Philip in his television appearance responding to Clinton that he wasn’t voting for Trump, not least of all because he has dozens of felony counts and four indictments against him, as well as two impeachments. But he noted that other voters were different.

“I’m not voting for him, I’ve said that to a lot of people … but at the end of the day what I’m saying is, at some point in time you’ve got to take into account what the voters are thinking about,” Smith said, explaining that tens of millions of voters don’t care about Trump’s legal troubles or whether he is guilty of the crimes he’s being accused of.

“They don’t care about the 91 counts. They’re thinking about their lives,” Smith explained, saying that many candidates seem detached from what the voters are actually feeling.

“Nobody wants to hear that from Hillary Rodham Clinton at this particular moment in time … that doesn’t exactly encourage [voters] from getting out of their seats and going to the polls.”

On Smith’s YouTube show in February, he said that Trump was a shoo-in to be reelected, even if he did become a convicted felon, because of Democratic Party policies on immigration.

Smith pointed to news stories about migrant families being given prepaid credit cards in New York cities for food and baby supplies, saying that illegal immigration had become “incredibly pervasive” under the Biden administration and that Biden had “capitulated to the extreme left.”

Worries about Biden being able to defeat Trump this cycle have also started piling up among his own donors and campaign team, reported the Washington Post.

“We all know this is a jump ball,” one Biden donor told the paper. “In 2016 we were reading Nate Silver, and we weren’t worried at all … [This time, W]e all are prepared to lose.”

Do You Want To Have Dinner In A Balloon In Space? You Can Do It For Half A Million Bucks.

Entrepreneurs like Elon Musk want us to believe that space is for everyone – that not just trained astronauts should be able to see the Earth from way up there.

Well, for everyone who has half a million dollars lying around.

This time it’s a company called SpaceVIP who is currently taking reservations for a “Stratospheric Dining Experience.”

Six people are invited to enjoy dinner at a Michelin Star restaurant inside a pressurized cabin – for $495,000 apiece.

They are planning the launch for as early as 2025 in a vessel called Spaceship Neptune. The company says this “space balloon,” designed by startup Space Perspective, is carbon neutral.

Source: Space PerspectiveSource: Space Perspective

The meal will be designed by Rasmus Munk, who is head chef at a 2-Michelin-Star restaurant, and will be “Holistic Cuisine.”

In case you’re wondering (because we were), “holistic cuisine” is a meal that “doubles as an intentional story that will inspire through and discussion on the role of humanity in protecting our planet while challenging the diner to reexamine our relationship with Earth and those who inhabit it.”

Diners will enjoy this experience 100,000 feet above sea level, watching the sunrise over the Earth’s curvature.

Roman Chiporukha, SpaceVIP’s founder, talked about the offering in a statement.

“Embarking on this unprecedented culinary odyssey to the cosmos marks a pivotal moment in human history. This inaugural voyage is but the first chapter in SpaceVIP’s mission to harness the transformative power of space travel to elevate human consciousness and shape the course of our collective evolution.”

They and representatives from Space Perspective hope the trip will give passengers the “Overview Effect,” which is a feeling of awe experienced by astronauts as they view the Earth from a totally different perspective.

The money from the tickets will reportedly be donated to the Space Prize Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women in the space industry advance.

Those tickets are 2,640-percent higher than the average yearly wage around the globe.

Source: Space PerspectiveSource: Space Perspective

They will be starting text flights later this year, but we should note that despite the billing of a “space” flight, the balloon will actually not enter outer space.

It will end it’s ascent about 43 miles below the Kármán line.

I feel like for that much money they should get you there.

Maybe the desserts will just fall flat if they go further.

If you thought that was interesting, you might like to read a story that reveals Earth’s priciest precious metal isn’t gold or platinum and costs over $10,000 an ounce!

Stefon Diggs Has a Solid Net Worth and It’s Getting Bigger

Stefon Diggs will be one of the highest paid players on the Houston Texans’ team. He’ll make three times as much as the quarterback.

As of 2024, Stefon Diggs is one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. The elite athlete helped bolster the Buffalo Bills almost into the Super Bowl and the Houston Texans are hoping he can do the same with stellar second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud.

With the news of Stefon moving from the cold and cruel climate of Highmark Stadium in Buffalo to the dome-controlled temps of NRG Stadium in Houston, it has us wondering about number 14’s net worth. Keep reading for all of the details.

What is Stefon Diggs’s net worth?

According to a May 8, 2022, Forbes profile, Stefon’s net worth at the time was $38.7 million. That included his football earnings through 2021 and endorsement deals with Jordan Brand, Marvel Studios, and Snickers. According to his contract breakdowns on Spotrac, he made $24,565,000 in 2022 and $24,415,000 in 2023, bringing his NFL earnings, as of now, to $107,605,421. Considering Stefon has to pay agents, managers, taxes, etc., it’s safe to say he’s worth roughly $80 million–$90 million today.

Based on his current contract, Stefon will make another $106,203,000, as long as he makes the roster in 2027. That will bring his football earnings to $213,808,421. Although unlikely, there’s still the potential for Stefon to get another contract after 2027 when he’ll be 34 years old. That’s not bad for a guy who was drafted in the fifth round, 146 overall, in 2015.

Stefon Diggs

Football player

Net worth: $80 million–$90 million

Stefon Diggs is a wide receiver for the Houston Texans. He played his first eight NFL seasons for the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. He has made four Pro Bowls and made the NFL Top 100 in the last six seasons.

Birth Name: Stefon Marsean Diggs

Birthdate: Nov. 29, 1993

Birthplace: Gaithersburg, Md.

Mother: Stephanie Diggs

Father: Aron Diggs

Children: Nova Diggs, Shiloh Diggs

Education: University of Maryland

The Bills trading Stefon Diggs was all but inevitable.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bills will receive the Minnesota Vikings’ 2025 second-round pick in exchange for Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

While a trade breaking on Twitter isn’t exactly new or news, it’s fun to poke around to see what the athlete in question was recently sharing. The night before the trade news, Stefon teased a potential move to warmer climates.

Article continues below advertisement

The most interesting aspect of the trade is the timing.

Pro Football Talk points out that by trading Stefon before June 1, the Bills will be responsible for $31 million of dead money in their 2024 salary cap. According to ESPN’s Stats & Information research, it’s the highest-known dead money charge ever for a wide receiver in any season.

NBC’s Mike Florio points out that the timing may have been a large factor in the move. “It’s possible, if not likely, that the Texans wanted to do it now so that Diggs will be on the team for the full extent of the off-season program. If the Bills had no better offers, and if the Texans were going to walk away if the trade didn’t happen now, the Bills had no choice.”

It seems like the Bills just wanted to move on from one of the game’s best receivers. ABC News points out Diggs is one of two receivers to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past four seasons, along with Tyreek Hill.

The Texans’ odds have gone up since acquiring Stefon.

Since the trade announcement, the Houston Texans’ 2024 odds have improved. Upon the news of the trade, DraftKings has the Texans at +1700 odds to win the Super Bowl. They were +2500 before the trade. This is good news for Texans’ fans and bad news for people hoping the Texans could have been a sleeper pick.
