The Pistons And Martin Lawrence Are Collaborating On A Line Of ‘Martin’ Inspired Gear

Martin is, to this day, one of the most beloved sitcoms of all-time, and fans of the show, particularly those in Detroit, are in for a treat this week. On Tuesday, the Pistons announced a new collaboration with Martin Lawrence on a clothing line inspired by Martin that features T-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys, and shorts with images from the show and the iconic Martin font that will be released this Friday, May 14.

Both Lawrence and the team offered statements on why the collaboration came together and the deep-seeded connection between the comedy legend, the city of Detroit (where the show was based), and the Pistons organization.

“Detroit has always shown me so much love and always shows up for me,” said Lawrence. “From stand-up tours to fans on the street Detroit has felt like home. It’s an honor to be part of something that means so much to me to this many years later.”

“With the city of Detroit as the show’s backdrop, Martin became must-watch TV in the 90’s,” said Mike Zavodsky, Chief Business Officer of the Detroit Pistons. “Martin’s love for the Pistons in the show translated into passion for the team – the fact that he has a ring from the 2004 team is proof of that. We’re thrilled to partner with Martin to introduce a merchandise line that pays homage to both Martin and the show’s Detroit roots.”

It is immediately one of the best collaborations between a team and celebrity in the NBA, and when the line drops on May 14 at the Pistons Shop it will be sure to move quickly.

Pride of Ownership

stork bird with epic huge nest Pride of Ownership

Photograph via climberman on reddit

Check out this stork’s amazing nest! According to Wikipedia:

The nest is typically used year after year especially by older males. The males arrive earlier in the season and choose the nests. Larger nests are associated with greater numbers of young successfully fledged, and appear to be sought after.

Several bird species often nest within the large nests of the white stork. Regular occupants are house sparrows, tree sparrows, and common starlings; less common residents include Eurasian kestrels, little owls, European rollers, white wagtails, black redstarts, Eurasian jackdaws, and Spanish sparrows.

White stork nests are also habitats for an array of small arthropods, particularly over the warmer months after the birds arrive to breed. Nesting over successive years, the storks bring more material to line their nests and layers of organic material accumulate within them. Not only do their bodies tend to regulate temperatures within the nest, but excrement, food remains and feather and skin fragments provide nourishment for a large and diverse population of free-living mesostigmatic mites. BREAK THE INTERNET

Broadband companies funded a campaign that flooded the FCC with fake comments ahead of its controversial repeal of net neutrality rules in 2017, the New York Attorney General’s office said.

In 2017, ahead of the FCC’s vote, it was found that millions of fraudulent comments—including ones with the names of dead people and members of Congress—were filed supporting the repeal.

In fact, one study found that 99% of comments from actual people were against the FCC repealing the rules.

The New York report notes that “an industry trade group and three companies that are among the biggest players in the United States internet, phone, and cable market” banded together to try and create the illusion of support for the FCC’s repeal and give it “cover.”

The “broadband industry players” spent $4.2 million that wound up generating more than 8.5 million comments to the FCC and letters to members of Congress.

The report notes the campaign was run through a non-profit, “Broadband for America” that used other groups to serve as the “public faces” of the campaign. Broadband for America’s members include AT&T, CenturyLink, Charter, Comcast, and a number of telecom lobby firms.

The Attorney General’s office obtained planning documents that said they wanted the campaign to get “widespread grassroots support” that would give former FCC Chairman Ajit Pai “volume and intellectual cover” to repeal net neutrality rules.

OVERLORDS

Snapchat can be sued over its speed filter, which is blamed in death of 3

A federal court has ruled that Snapchat can be sued after three of its users were killed during a car crash in 2017.

The victims, three young men from Wisconsin, were traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour before crashing into a tree. Moments before the fatal wreck, one of the occupants opened Snapchat on his phone in order to use the app’s controversial “speed filter.”

The parents of two of the victims say the filter, which tells users how fast they are moving in real-time, encouraged users to drive recklessly in order to receive achievement points.

Now, it appears the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agrees that a lawsuit should be permitted.

In a ruling, the court argued that Snapchat was not shielded by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects social media companies from being held liable for the content posted by its users.

Specifically, Snapchat has been accused of “negligent design” for implementing the speed filter into its app.

BROADBAND

Study shows two-thirds of Americans don’t trust their internet service providers

Mozilla, the tech company behind the Firefox browser and long-time supporter of net neutrality rules, released a survey this week that found that a majority of people don’t think internet service providers (ISPs) are looking out for them.

The survey was framed by Mozilla as an example of why net neutrality rules should come back.

Net neutrality rules were repealed by the FCC in 2017 when it was controlled by Republicans. Now, the FCC can have a Democratic majority once President Joe Biden fills out the agency.

With all of this as a backdrop, Mozilla released a survey that found 63% of consumers don’t trust ISPs to look out for their best interests. It also found that 72% want to control what they see online without meddling or interference from ISPs.

Demi Lovato Is Investigating UFOs On ‘Unidentified,’ A New Series On Peacock

Tom DeLonge isn’t the only music star with an interest in aliens and UFOs: It was revealed today that Demi Lovato is set to host and executive produce Unidentified With Demi Lovato, a limited, unscripted series that has been ordered for four episodes at Peacock.

Variety reported the news today and described the show, “In Unidentified With Demi Lovato, the music superstar and actress, her skeptical best friend Matthew, and her sister Dallas attempt to uncover the truth about the UFO phenomena. While consulting with leading experts, the trio will investigate recent eyewitness encounters, uncover secret government reports, and conduct tests at known UFO hot spots.”

This isn’t Lovato’s first brush with the extraterrestrial: In October 2020, Lovato shared an Instagram post about CE5 Contact, a mobile app that supposedly helps users make “peaceful contact with extraterrestrial civilizations as well as locating others in your area who are interested in making contact.” She wrote, “Over the past couple months I have dug deep into the science of consciousness and experienced not only peace and serenity like I’ve never known but I also have witnessed the most incredibly profound sightings both in the sky as well as feet away from me. This planet is on a very negative path towards destruction but WE can change that together. If we were to get 1% of the population to meditate and make contact, we would force our governments to acknowledge the truth about extraterrestrial life among us and change our destructive habits destroying our planet. This is just some of the evidence from under the stars in the desert sky that can no longer be ignored and must be shared immediately.”

Liminal Spaces / Images With Elegiac Auras

Origin

The online popularity of images of liminal spaces follows the popularity of The Backrooms meme that began in May 2019. On May 12th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user launched a thread of “disquieting images” that “felt off” on the /x/ board, posting a photograph of an empty hallway lit by square ceiling lights and with its walls covered with monotonous yellow wallpaper. In the same thread, another user replied with a creepypasta based on the photograph, spawning the meme.

Floor Floor Wall Room Flooring Ceiling

“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in
God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.

Precursor

Prior to the /x/ thread, several notable tweets about liminal places were made online. On May 21st, 2018, Twitter user @ReiverCafferata replied to another tweet with an explanation about liminal spaces, with their tweet gaining over 100 retweets and 1,400 likes (shown below, left). On March 15th, 2019, Twitter user @zerstoerer tweeted a photograph of the interior of a Holiday Inn Express near Heathrow Airport in London, England. The tweet (shown below, center) received over 12,000 likes and 3,000 retweets in one year, with the photograph becoming viral. On April 19th, 2019, Twitter user @unwrappedlolly created a thread about liminal spaces, with the first post in the thread gaining over 6,000 retweets and 13,100 likes (shown below, right).

Why Did Former NFL Player Tim Tebow Retire From a Career with the Mets?

In February 2021, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow announced his retirement from professional baseball. In 2016, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner returned to baseball for the first time since playing during his junior year of high school. The 33-year-old reached Triple-A levels for the New York Mets in 2019, and since then played 77 games, batted a healthy .163, homered four times, and finished his career with a .223 average over 287 games.

In a statement on Twitter, Tim wrote, “I want to thank the Mets, Mr. Alderson, the fans, and all my teammates for the chance to be a part of such a great organization. I loved every minute of the journey, but at this time, I feel called in other directions. I never want to be partially in on anything. I always want to be 100 percent in on whatever I choose.”

“Thank you again for everyone’s support of this awesome journey in baseball, I’ll always cherish my time as a Met. #LGM,” he went on to say.

Many are curious why Tim retired from the New York Mets, and whether he left in order to return to the NFL. Keep reading to find out everything we know about what Tim Tebow might be up to next.

Tim Tebow retired from baseball because he’s been called “in other directions.”

It seems that Tim Tebow’s career is taking him in a completely different direction from baseball, and that would be back to the NFL. It’s not what you think, though, because Tim will not be coming back to the NFL to play in the quarterback position as he did from 2010 to 2015. In the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos traded up to select the quarterback as the 25th overall pick in the first round. A year later, Tim was the starting quarterback for the team who led them to the playoffs.

However, after the 2011 season, he never played another down for the Broncos. After leaving Denver, Tim had a brief stint with the New York Giants and the New England Patriots before his quarterback career came to an end.

From what we know now, Tim is trying to come back to the NFL as a tight end. According to ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars are projected to sign Tim in the coming weeks on a one-year contract.

During the 2021 NFL draft, word got out that the former quarterback had been tapped for the Jaguars’ tight end position, and it was ultimately confirmed by the team’s general manager, Trent Baalke. It will be interesting to see him as a tight end, as Tim has never played the position over his entire football career, which spans high school, college, and the NFL.

Did Tim retire from baseball just to reinvent his football career? Only time will tell, and hopefully, his retirement from baseball will pay off!

‘The Simpsons’ Released One Of Its Morrissey Parody Songs As A Single

On a recent episode of The Simpsons, the show featured a character named Quilloughby, who used to be a member of an ’80s band called Quilloughby & The Snuffs. The band was a clear parody of The Smiths and Quilloughby of Morrissey, who was extremely not pleased with the episode. Now, the folks behind The Simpsons have gone ahead and released a parody song from the episode, “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You),” as a single.

The track, which is now available on streaming platforms, is credited to Quilloughby and Lisa Simpson, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Yeardley Smith voicing their respective characters. The song is very much a The Smiths-style tune and it begins with Quilloughby singing, “Every day I try to smile / but can’t help but frown / Every day I draw my bath / and pray I will drown / I step out my door and I take a deep breath / Turn back inside and pray for my death / ‘Cause everyone is horrid / except me and possibly you / Oh, everyone is horrid / and my dear / I fear you are, too.”

Morrissey previously said in response to the episode, “Since my very first interview several decades ago I have lived with horrible accusations to such a degree that it is generally understood that ‘this is how we write about Morrissey’. In other words, I’m quite used to it. I’ve had enough horror thrown at me that would kill off a herd of bison. Accusations usually come from someone with a crazed desire for importance; they don’t operate at a very high level. Writing for The Simpsons, for example, evidently requires only complete ignorance. But all of these things are too easy for me to say. In a world obsessed with Hate Laws, there are none that protect me.”

Alex Rodriguez Commented On Jennifer Lopez Reportedly Getting Back Together With Ben Affleck: ‘Go Yankees’

Alex Rodriguez has been a busy guy in recent weeks due to his interest in teaming up with former Walmart executive Marc Lore to purchase the Minnesota Timberwolves. In addition to his various business interests, though, his name has popped up in tabloids due to his high-profile split from Jennifer Lopez after more than four years.

Lopez has since gotten back together with Ben Affleck, according to reports, as the two recently spent some time with one another in Montana. Rodriguez has not been asked about any of this, in large part because, well, he’s had other things to do than be asked about this. But according to Page Six, Rodriguez was recently pressed about their relationship, and he gave a pretty straightforward answer to the press.

“Go Yankees,” Rodriguez, who of course played for the New York Yankees, said.

Now, some might take this as shade towards Affleck, a well-documented Boston Red Sox fan, but this also seems like a thing A-Rod would say as a stock answer to literally anything you asked him that he did not want to actually answer. There’s that update on Rodriguez’s personal life, so let’s get a look into how things are going in Rodriguez’s pursuit of becoming an owner of an NBA team, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Tech entrepreneur Marc Lore and former baseball star Alex Rodriguez’s 30-day exclusive negotiating window to purchase the Minnesota Timberwolves from Glen Taylor has ended without a formal deal.

Both sides are continuing to negotiate in good faith in an attempt to reach an agreement and it is possible that an extension to the window could be worked out, but one isn’t currently in place, sources told ESPN.

Rodriguez has attempted to purchase an ownership stake in another professional sports team, the New York Mets, in recent months, but that fell through. While this is an obvious setback in his pursuit of being part of the Timberwolves’ ownership group, the good news is that it does appear that there is still an avenue for this to work out.
