Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi emigrated with his family from Balkh to Nishapur due to the destruction of the Mongols. He and his family spent many years moving between the cities of the Islamic world until they settled in the city of Qarman and then migrated to Konya, the capital of the Seljuk state of Rum, at the invitation of the Seljuk Sultan Aladdin Kayqubad I. His lifetime spanned a highly turbulent period in history as the Mongols swept through and destroyed many of the most important cities of the Islamic lands.
