Bedtime stories are more than just a time-honored parenting tradition. Studies consistently show that bedtime stories are crucial for building literacy in young children. But many parents are too busy or stressed to devote the time to read to their kids at night.

Two sisters in Delaware came up with a solution to that problem. Every week, 13-year-old Zaria Willard and 8-year-old Hailey Willard take a trip to their local library to pick out books. Then, five nights a week, they read stories aloud on Facebook Live. Anyone can tune in.

“We take turns reading,” Zaria told Inside Edition. “It all started to help kids get a bedtime story because maybe their parents are busy or they don’t have the time to read, so that’s what we are helping.”

Zaria and Hailey also make sure to use books that are relevant to a variety of children.

“When we read stories we… try to use black characters because we don’t see a lot of that around here so we’re here to tell people that black kids are out there too,” Hailey explained.

“It makes me happy that it helps somebody. It makes me feel good when I go online,” Zaria added.

The sisters are so inspired by the power of books that they’re now working on a book of their own about their family.
