Yesterday (31 December 695 CE) marked the birthday of Muhammad bin Qasim, the first general to lead Muslim armies into India.

Muhammad bin Qasim is considered one of the greatest generals not only in Islamic history but also in the history of the world.

Muhammad ibn al-Qasim belonged to the Banu Thaqif, an Arab tribe that is concentrated around the city of Taif in western Arabia.

He was known by Laqab ‘Imad ad-Din’. He was an Arab military commander in service of the Umayyad Caliphate and led the Muslim Conquest of Multan and Sindh (Pakistan) from the last Hindu ruler Raja Dahir in a conflict with Alor.

Muhammad bin Qasim became the first Muslim to have successfully captured Hindu land, which marked the beginning of Muslim rule in India.

He established Islamic rule throughout the region, serving as governor of Sindh from 712 until his death in 715.
