Waves Hairstyle Photoshops refer to digitally edited images in which the subject has a curly hairstyle known as “waves” superimposed over their original hair. Often paired with photoshopped AirPods, the edits are considered a development of the AirPod Flexing meme.
Origin
On January 5th, Instagram user professorpumpp posted a photograph of Martin Luther King wearing Apple AirPods. On the same day, professorpumpp posted a photoshopped image of former United States President Barack Obama wearing AirPods and a wave haircut. The post gained over 8,400 likes in nine days.
Spread
On January 9th, 2019, Instagram user pinkmeth.v2 posted a similarly edited photograph of United States president Donald Trump with a reference to Gummo’s song “Drip or Drown” in the description. The post gained over 1,400 likes within five days; additionally, a repost by professorpumpp gained 13,500 likes within the same period.
In the following days, pinkmeth.v2 and other Instagram users posted more edits in which various individuals were given AirPods and the waves hairstyle, with references to “dripping” often included in the description.
