Weezer has done an exceptional job over the years walking the line between irony and genuine emotion, which is in part why they’ve found success with both rockin’ ballads and tongue-in-cheek pop numbers. When you blend a bit of each together, you get a song very indicative of Weezer’s whole vibe, “Heart Songs,” which details the tunes over the years that were important to the formative years of singer Rivers Cuomo, from ’70s folk ballads, ’80s pop tunes, thrash metal, and, of course, Nirvana. While the song evokes a sad sense of nostalgia throughout, there’s something wonderful and inspiring about how the band embraces the lasting power of music, as Cuomo wails, “These are the songs we keep singing” with all of his heart and soul until the very final lyric.

Verdict: Secretly Happy!
