This chart is a lot to take in. I argue in The New Daily that it encourages us to be outrageously optimistic about gender equity in the near future.

The dotted lines show parents, the full lines show non-parents by gender. Let’s ignore parents for now. The gender pay gap for full-time workers doesn’t exist for people under 45. Under the age of 31 only mums take home less pay. Over 31 no type of full-time worker earns more money than dads. Why? Pay discrimination plays a role (mostly for older men), upward social mobility of women plays a role (women prefer men with higher educational attainment and higher pay than themselves ensuring that men with higher earning capacity are more likely to become dads), pressure to provide might play a role to. Soooo, much to unpack here.

The full argument and my reasoning why the gender pay gap will be closed soon can be found in my column: https://thenewdaily.com.au/opinion/2023/05/13/the-stats-guy-gender-gap/
