The Electoral College Imbalance: Ballots Cast vs EC Votes
Calculations done in libreoffice calc. Really just dividing EC votes by the total votes cast, nothing crazy.
I
know it is popular (as seen on the front page currently) to talk about
how a vote in one state is comparatively worth less than a vote in
another by looking at relative population.I have long taken issue with this analysis. Because it ignores one crucial
factor: turnout. Some states turn out significantly more than others,
but the number of electoral votes each state gets remains the same. Now
if we were to switch to a system entirely based on the popular vote,
that would certainly change the calculus for voters outside of
battleground states and affect turnout. But nonetheless, this, I think
gives a much more accurate picture of the imbalance of the Electoral
College vs a population based analysis.
