Suleiman I, commonly known as Suleiman the Magnificent in the West and Suleiman the Lawgiver in his realm.

He was the tenth and longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Under his rule, the Ottoman caliphate ruled over at least 25 million people.

He captured Belgrade and Rhodes forcing the Knights of St. John to leave for Malta, defeated King Lewis of Hungary, took Buda, besieged Vienna in September and October of that year, and Transylvania came into his possession in 1562.

Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet ruled the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and through the Persian Gulf.

Suleyman the Magnificent ruled the Ottoman Empire for 46 years between 1520 – 1566 and doubled its territory. This was a rising period for the capital Istanbul, as it was for the whole Empire.
