Sheikh Edebali also known with the name Baliseyh was an Ottoman Sunni Muslim Sheikh of the Ahi brotherhood, who helped shape and develop the policies of the growing Ottoman State. He became first Qadi of the Ottoman Empire.

Sheikh Edebali was born in 1206 CE in Inac. He was a Turkish Sufi Sheikh known for his purity and education. Being descendant of the Banu Tamim tribe and Al-Khater family, he was much respected and honored in the religious circle of the Muslim world of that era.

Ertugrul Ghazi, the leader of the Kayi tribe, was very much close to Sheikh Edebali. Sheikh Edebali often used to convey the teachings of Islam to Ertugrul.

Osman Ghazi, son of Ertugrul Ghazi, also used to visit Sheikh Edebali oftentimes. Sheikh Edebali became his spiritual mentor and later, he also girt Osman Ghazi with Sword of Ghazi.

In an often mentioned account, Osman Ghazi, while at Edebali’s dergah, dreamed of the crescent moon coming out of Edebali’s chest and entering his own. This dream was to lead to the establishment of the Ottoman State.

Edebali’s daughter Rabia Bala was married to Osman Ghazi in 1289. After Osman Bey passed away, Sheikh Edebali lived with his daughter Rabia Bala Hatun and his grandson Alaaddin in a small village in Bilecik. Sheikh Edebali lived 120 years and died in 1326.
