Rush Hour Traffic Prevents Mom In Labor From Getting To Hospital, So She Delivers Baby In Car

Babies are unpredictable. Despite the best-laid plans, some births don’t go down as anticipated. Such was the case for Jake and Chrissy VanDyke. Chrissy visited her doctor at just over 38 weeks and had plans to be induced two days after her appointment. Her baby boy had other plans, however.

Following the visit, the couple made plans for their two daughters, Chazelynn and Amira, to stay with family members. It was a good thing because just a few hours later, Chrissy began having contractions. The couple flew out the door at 6:15PM and found themselves battling rush hour traffic.

Jake was doing his best to get them to the hospital, but when Chrissy said she felt like she needed to push, he called 911. That’s when the dispatcher informed him he would need to pull over. Jake pulled to the side of I-96 near Nunica. The dispatcher instructed Jake to see if the baby’s head was visible — it was, and a few minutes later, the baby began making his entrance into the world. Jake also had to pull the umbilical cord, which was wrapped around the baby’s head, over his head to avoid any complications.

It took only a few more minutes before Chrissy and Jake welcomed Orion James VanDyke into the world. Jake was tying off the umbilical cord with his shoelace when the ambulance and officers arrived at the scene.  The couple was grateful to the 911 dispatcher who walked them through each step of the birth. They’re excited to tell their little guy all about his exciting entrance to the world when he’s a bit older.
