Pashtun Tribes Series – Sarbani (North) Confederation

The Sarbani are a confederation of various Pashtun tribes living across Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are said to be descendants of Sarban, the eldest son of Qais Abdur Rashid whom is thought to be the ancestor of all Pashtun tribes and thus the founding father of the Pashtun people. The Northern branch of the Sarbani migrated during 1490-1530 from their native homeland around Kandahar in modern day Afghanistan towards the northern slopes of the Spin Ghar mountains along with conquering Peshawar Valley and the Sultanate of Swat who ruled over the hills to the North, thereby displacing and/or absorbing the pre-existing indigenous Dardic and Hindkowan tribes inhabiting the region.

The Northern Sarbani are divided into 10 tribes within 4 sub-confederations based on descent and lineage:
