‘This is why some people are afraid to travel’: Guest asks for special room at hotel, is shocked by what they give him

An InterContinental Hotel guest recently turned to social media to voice dissatisfaction after not receiving the wheelchair-accessible room he had reserved.

In a widely circulated video garnering over 676,000 views and 108,200 likes, TikToker Kevin Ortiz (@wheelchairkev) shared his experience of a hotel failing to meet his basic accommodation requirements for a comfortable stay.

“I booked a handicap-accessible room at the Intercontinental in Los Angeles,” the man began in the clip. “It was supposed to have a roll-in shower.”

Allegedly, a worker even confirmed the room would have the accommodations he requested.

“He said ‘wheelchair accessible king with a roll-in shower,'” Ortiz continued.

However, the room did not have an important feature.

“It does not have a roll-in shower,” he said.

For the TikToker, the experience highlighted why disabled people often avoid travel.

“This is why some people are afraid to travel,” he said. “I can’t shower. I have things to do tomorrow. I can’t even shower.”

Kevin appeared very disappointed and exasperated as he spoke to his viewers.

“People don’t understand: When it comes to booking a room that is wheelchair-accessible, it’s all about the shower,” he continued.

Ultimately, the TikToker asked for help from his viewers.

“I paid a lot of money for this room, guys,” he said. “Please, tag them.”

@wheelchairkev They gave away my wheelchair ♿️ accessible room 🥺 #wheelchairkev #fyp #explore #explorepage ♬ original sound – Kevin Ortiz

In the comments section, several viewers tagged the hotel.

“@Hotel InterContinental Cali Make this right!!!” user Laini Brown wrote. “This man deserves the room he booked!!!”

Others gave him advice on what steps to take in the wake of the booking mix-up.

“I would file a claim with ADA.gov if the manager of the InterContinental Los Angeles does not make this right,” user Brown Bull_01 advised.

“Go to the front desk and make them accommodate you!” another viewer said. “If the person they gave the room to is not ADA they need to switch rooms or give you a refund!”

According to wheelchairtravel.org, if a wheelchair-accessible room that was reserved is not available for any reason, the hotel is responsible for moving the patron to a nearby hotel and paying for it. The website also advises never accepting any accommodation that does not have the features it was supposed to have.

The Daily Dot reached out to InterContinental Hotels Group PLC via email and Kevin Ortiz by TikTok comment for more information.

In a viral clip, a hotel guest said he didn’t get the accommodations he booked, and such experiences are why some people are afraid to travel.

His Dad Was Embarrassed About A Job He Really Liked And Offered Him Cash To Quit. So He Found A Way To Keep The Job And The Money.

Source: Reddit/AITA/Shutterstock

It’s not easy feeling like you’re the kid whose parents just aren’t proud of them – especially when in your eyes, you’re doing just fine.

When they won’t let it go, well…things can get ugly.

OP’s high school job turned into a career option for him.

I’ve worked for the same restaurant chain since I was legally allowed to work at 16. At first it was just a part time job to make money while in high school.

At 18 I ended up transferring to a location a few hours away where I was going to college and got promoted to supervisor. After a semester I ended up dropping out of school due to the affects it was having on my mental health.

I’ve never been very motivated by money, just want to pay my bills and have a simple life with good friends and family near by. So I decided to stick with this company and continue to work my way up until I could manage my own location.

His dad didn’t see it that way, and it has been a constant source of conflict.

Ever since I dropped out of college though my dad took every opportunity to try and persuade me to do “something more serious” with my life.

He’s always been very motivated by money so it’s hard for him to understand why I don’t feel the same way. Which I could understand to some extent but after two years of every single conversation with my dad ending in an argument over my career choice it had heavily impacted our relationship.

It’s very demeaning being constantly reminded that you’re “wasting your life” or “not being responsible” even though I was in my own apartment with my own car at just 18 yrs old.

We didn’t have a healthy relationship to begin with so this added disagreement just made me even more resentful.

So, one day I finally had the opportunity to move out of state where a lot of my extended family lived, along with being promoted to assistant manager at this new location.

Recently, his dad offered him money if he would get a higher paying job.

When I told my dad this he begged me to look for another job. He said he was embarrassed by my profession and wished he could post about my accomplishments like my siblings.

He ended up offering me $2000 if I found a job that would pay me $14 an hr or more. Generous yes but I’d rather have a dad who supports me or at least doesn’t belittle me you know?

OP got a raise at work and took the cash.

Anyway, I texted the manager I had been in contact with about my transfer to ask if we could discuss my pay. I convinced her to increase the offer from $13.75 to $14.25.

I told my dad I had gotten an offer for more than $14 and asked for the $2000 as it was time for me to put down my deposit/firsts rent for my new apt.

He said he would eventually but that technically he never clarified when he had to pay me. He had plentyyy of money but was always stingy with it.

I told him I’d just ask my grandma for a loan since he wasn’t following through and I’d use his money to pay her back “eventually”.

Of course he didn’t want our family to know he was being a butt so he sent me the money. Afterwards, he asked me about my new job to which I said “I’m not getting a new job I’m just getting a raise”.

I could hear the steam coming out his ears over the phone. He started yelling and demanding I send back the money but I told him “well you’re right you never clarified when you’d have to pay up but you also never clarified that the wage I needed had to come from a different job”.

I hung up and kept the money. We didn’t talk for a while and still hardly talk now.

I’d say he won – but would Reddit?

Everyone is happy for him.

Vandals Kept Playing Baseball With Her Mailbox, So A Helpful Brother Set A Trap That Got Shattering Revenge

Source: Reddit/AITA/Shutterstock

There are way too many stories online about people whose mailboxes get repeatedly bashed in by kids riding around with baseball bats.

I’m not sure why this is so much fun, but I have to imagine they live in places with not a whole lot else to do.

OP’s sister’s mailbox was victimized but she didn’t want to break any laws.

My sister lives in a more rural area and has recently been plagued with having her mailbox smashed in twice in one month. Someone was playing mailbox baseball and she was one of the victims.

She asked for my help and was worried about staying within the law to protect herself.

So, he built a concrete insert to keep out “snakes.”

I told her that we could figure something out so I went to Home Depot and purchased two identical steel mailboxes, the traditional kind with the rounded top.

I took one mailbox and glued a layer of 1/16″ foam underlayment to the inside. I filled it with concrete making sure to add the appropriate rebar with a curved handle sticking out of the end.

Once everything was set I cut off the outer mailbox shell and used a torch to burn off the foam underlayment still stuck to the concrete.

What was left was a slightly undersized concrete plug that would perfectly fit in the second mailbox and that could be inserted and removed.

You see my sister is afraid of snakes, by inserting the concrete plug into the mailbox at night it would give her the peace of mind that a snake can’t into her mailbox.

It worked – and also seems to have broken at least one window.

I installed the second mailbox, informed my sister how the anti-snake concrete plug worked, and explained that the best time to put it in the mailbox would be at night.

Strangely enough one morning there was a mark on her new mailbox and a bunch of small glass pieces along the road.

Hypothetically speaking it was the kind of glass produced by someone swinging a baseball bat, having it bounce back off of a mailbox, and smashing a car window.

On a positive note her mailbox has remained snake free.

I don’t think Reddit will ever get tired of these tales.

The top comment says some people have to learn the hard way.

‘We can play Starbucks in 7/11 now’: Customer reveals trick to making an iced macchiato at 7-Eleven

A 7-Eleven customer recorded herself making an iced macchiato at one of the convenience store’s locations, proving that you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a chilled, caffeinated beverage while out and about.

Franki’s (@breadandfranki) video, however, sparked a conversation about the consistency of these coffee offerings in different 7-Eleven locations, with numerous people mentioning that they probably wouldn’t be able to replicate what she made at the stores they frequent.

“POV: getting iced coffee from 7/11 like I’m in a convenience store in Korea,” she wrote in a text overlay on the video, while adding in a caption for the clip: “I love playing korean convenience store simulator.”

The beginning of the clip starts with Franki filling their cup up with ice. They then grab a caramel-flavored coffee creamer and begin pouring it into the Big Gulp cup, and then another, and then another, and then another.

“Making a macchiato,” she writes in an overlay as she continues to fill the cup up until it’s about 75% filled with ice and creamer.

Next up: caramel syrup and espresso. She grabs the bottle and puts two pumps of the sweetener into the cup. Then, she grabs a paper cup, places it under a fresh coffee machine, and selects the double espresso option. The machine then begins to grind up the beans and shoot out coffee into her cup from the dual dispenser. In the next frame, she takes the paper cup of espresso and then dumps it into the ice and cream concoction.

She shows off the white and brown beverage on camera and then begins to swirl it around—resulting in a convenience store iced macchiato that probably costs a fraction of the amount that dedicated coffee shops charge for them.

According to The Takeout, 7-Eleven has “the best iced coffee” folks would never expect, writing: “Iced coffee from 7-Eleven is perhaps the single most underrated coffee in the quick-service game.”

The outlet even went on to praise the “taps” that exist at some of the convenience store’s locations, highlighting the variety of different beverages that allow for customers to pour themselves a variety of different brewed coffees at their fingertips.

In Franki’s video, however, she quickly brews herself a fresh double espresso and can customize her cup of ice with whatever creamers and flavorings the chain offers.

According to Allrecipes, the most expensive 7-Eleven coffee comes in a 24-ounce cup and guests are charged $2.89—smaller variants, unsurprisingly cost less. But the store has touted that it offers even bigger coffee savings for folks who install its mobile application, writing that 7-Eleven Rewards members can regularly enjoy $1.50 coffees of any size.

This value isn’t something that the chain shies away from, but rather implements as part of its marketing tactics.

“We are always looking to enhance value for our customers, so coffee drinkers who bring their own reusable cup in-store will only pay $1.50 for a regular coffee,” the chain’s CEO and Managing Director, Angus McKay stated in a press release. “By comparison, it’s not uncommon to see a regular coffee cost between $4.50-$5.50. If a customer was to buy a regular coffee every day of the year from 7-Eleven, instead of paying $4 or more elsewhere, they’d still save more than $730 per year.”

The comments section of Franki’s video painted a slightly different picture for most folks, however.

One person wrote: “my 7/11 doesn’t have syrups or espresso only coffee,” which suggests that the way 7/11 franchises are run is ultimately up to the franchise owner. If they’re not looking to maintain a full coffee bar at their store, then customers may not be able to enjoy the same type of caffeinated customizations that Franki was able to make.

It seems that other TikTokers were in this same camp as well. “Where you from cause my 7/11 don’t have espresso,” they said.

“The way i went to try and get iced coffee and the machine was also out of both,” someone else remarked.

“God I would LOVE if my 7/11 had espresso,” a further user said.

@breadandfranki I love playing korean convenience store simulator 😝😝 #koreanconveniencestore #conveniencestore #icedcoffee ♬ original sound – franki

Other commenters were concerned with the amount of creamer Franki dumped into her cup of ice.

“How many little creamers did it take to fill the cup?! Omggg I’m curious,” one wrote.

Another said, “That’s an insane amount of creamer tho.”

However, others saw the benefit of being able to make your own bespoke iced coffee at a 7-Eleven.

As one user wrote: “this is so cute fr & this is actually cost effective too omg.”

A Customer Tried To Insist A Pharmacy Tech Call Him “Doctor,” But He Turned The Tables And Embarrassed Him In Front Of Everybody

Source: Reddit/AITA/Shutterstock

Any job that involves facing the public is bound to have days where those customers are just a bit too much.

When your customer is someone who tries to bully you into doing what they want, well…things can get tense.

OP is a pharmacist tech and verifies that doctors are usually the worst patients.

Years ago I used to work as a pharmacy tech for a major retail pharmacy.

Occasionally, we’d have to deal with patients that also happen to be doctors who believe they deserve VIP status.

These are the kind of people that think that going to school for a long time means the should be held at a higher regard compared to others.

One day, a doctor/patient did not like the price of his meds.

This one particular doctor (we’ll call him Dr. Smith) came in one day and while ringing him up he balked at the price of the prescription.

Typically prescription copays were even dollar amounts but this was not.

Given that this was early in the year and the price was what it was I posited that he was seeing his insurance deductible being added into the copay price.

This was a typical issue we would see at the start of every year because many people don’t know how their insurance plans work.

He insisted that it was not his deductible and the insurance must have not been billed.

I showed him the confirmation of insurance billing/approval and the price breakdown. He wasn’t having it. Cue the following dialog:

He insisted OP call him “doctor” when addressing him, but OP stood his ground.

“I’m sorry Mr. Smith. If you want to call your insurance company to get more information you can but I can assure you the billing was performed correctly.”

“That’s DOCTOR Smith!”

“You’re not my doctor…”

A silence fell in the general vicinity. Pills stopped being counted, bags stopped being packed. I didn’t break eye contact, his wavered.

I don’t know how many times in his life he tried to pull that card on people in situations where being a doctor was completely irrelevant in order to assert some misguided sense of dominance, but he found out that day that it was all an illusion.

He pulled out his credit card, paid, mumbled something unintelligible, and left visibly embarrassed.

I bet Reddit is going to want to high-five him for this one!

This would have been a great response, too.

But you know, not all doctors.

Then again, some definitely are.

Good for him. He stood up for all of us.

34 Things That’ll Feel Like Little Gifts In The Mail

Lulu Candles is a small business offering candles, diffusers, perfumes, and more.

Promising review: “I was staying over at a friend’s house and sitting next to her coffee table. She had this candle on the table, and even though it wasn’t lit, I could smell it, and it was so delicious that I instantly went online to find it and bought it for myself! If this came in a perfume, I would buy enough to last the rest of my life. I don’t know how to even explain the scent, but if you are an amber/patchouli/vanilla fan, this is absolutely for you. The jasmine adds an unbelievable freshness without a flowery scent. I even bought the shampoo and conditioner which I will probably use as more of a body wash and shaving cream, but that is how desperate I am to get this scent on me! When burnt, the candle has a nice strong smell, and it burns really nicely. Even though this is a little expensive, it is worth every penny because I’ve never smelled anything like it.” —Melissa I.

What Time Is The Solar Eclipse On April 8?

Getty Image

Vampire Weekend is in a unique position to capitalize on the total solar eclipse on April 8. In February, Vampire Weekend announced “a special live performance in Austin, Texas, during the historic total eclipse” at the Moody Amphitheater in celebration of their Only God Was Above Us album release on Friday, April 5. But you don’t have to be a Grammy-winning rocker to enjoy the total solar eclipse.

What Time Is The Solar Eclipse On April 8?

NASA has an interactive map because, of course, it does.

“This Monday, April 8, 2024, [a] total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada,” the website explains. “The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PST.”

The explanation continues, “The path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.”

The website provides a table estimating visibility for various locations — broken into five categories: Partial Begins, Totality Begins, Maximum, Totality Ends, and Partial Ends.

CBS also reported on potential cloud coverage across the projected visibility path throughout April 8.

According to ABC News, nobody should take this total solar eclipse for granted, even though the last one in the US was in August 2017.

“If you look previous to 2017, the last one was in 1979,” former NASA Goddard Space Flight Center astrophysicist Fred Espenak told ABC News. “So it’s a little bit deceptive that these two eclipses were in seven years of each other.”

Lil Wayne And Young Thug Will Reunite To ‘Bless’ Hip-Hop On Their Upcoming Single

Getty Image

Young Thug remains embroiled in the YSL Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations (RICO) trial in Fulton County, Georgia, stemming from his, Gunna’s, and 26 other defendants‘ arrest in May 2022. Despite his imprisonment, Young Thug has released Business Is Business, revealed a forthcoming apparel brand, and served up several features, including on Kid Cudi’s Insano.

On Wednesday, April 3, Lil Wayne announced “Bless” featuring Young Thug. An Instagram teaser presents Thugger and Weezy on an animated card in a flaming wrestling ring.

On March 26, Lil Wayne announced “Weezy Vs. Wheezy” (stylized as “WvW”) will arrive on Friday, April 5. “YOUNG MONEY PRESENTS WEEZY VS WHEEZY,” the pre-save link teases alongside a poster showing Lil Wayne and producer Wheezy. “THIS IS COMING, HELL OR HIGH WATER 4/5/2024.”

Throughout this week, Lil Wayne has been hooking his promotion around WWE’s WrestleMania 40, which is set for Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

As of this writing, it’s unclear if “Weezy Vs Wheezy” is a single or full-blown collaborative project, but announcing “Bless” in the same aesthetic vein as “WVW” is leading some people to believe that it could be a full-blown project.

Regardless, Wayne and Young Thug linking up for a song is noteworthy in itself, given their extensive history, as chronicled by Billboard.

Young Thug is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Signs of Dementia Revealed While Brushing Teeth

In his book How To Prevent Dementia, Dr. Richard Restak (neurologist, neuropsychiatrist, author, and professor) shared that some signs of dementia can show up first in everyday tasks ― including brushing your teeth.

“Four impairments underlie the outer expressions and inner experiences of the Alzheimer patient,” the doctor shared in his book. He called these the “four As.”

One sign is amnesia, he says ― simply forgetting things. Then, there’s aphasia, which involves not being able to understand, find, or use the right words.

“Neither amnesia nor aphasia in their milder forms is always abnormal,” Restak says. But “the third and fourth of the four A’s are always a sign something is amiss,” he adds.

One of these is agnosia, or “an impairment of correctly understanding information provided by the senses of seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting.” For instance, someone might not be able to recognise a beloved family member by sight.

The final one, apraxia, refers to an inability to perform “purposeful and highly practiced actions despite normal muscle strength and tone.”

Brushing your teeth is a good example of where apraxia may show up
