TUESDAY, Oct. 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Hospitalized COVID-19 patients face an increased risk of developing dangerous blood clots, a new review indicates.
The odds of a clot are highest for the most critically ill patients. Analysis of 66 studies found that 23% of COVID-19 patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) developed a blood clot in the leg, known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Overall prevalence of a DVT was 14% among ICU and non-ICU COVID-19 patients, and 8% among those with mild-to-moderate disease risk who were not admitted to the ICU.
The “numbers are surprisingly high when compared with other hospitalized patients,” said study author Dr. Cihan Ay.
Of great concern are blood clots in the legs that can break away and travel to the lungs. This is a life-threatening condition known as pulmonary embolism (PE).
Nearly 4% of patients not admitted to the ICU developed a pulmonary embolism. And “we found a very high PE risk of 14% in patients treated at an intensive care unit,” said Ay, an associate professor in hematology and hemostaseology at the Medical University of Vienna in Austria.
According to the American Heart Association, DVT and PE are each a form of venous thromboembolism, or VTE, as both refer to a blood clot that originates in a vein.
VTE is estimated to affect between 300,000 and 600,000 Americans every year, the AHA notes. It is most frequently triggered by surgery, cancer, hospitalization or long-term immobilization.
To examine VTE risk related to COVID-19, Ay and his colleagues analyzed the findings of 66 studies, involving roughly 28,000 COVID-19 patients.
On average, the COVID-19 patients were about 63 years old, and six in 10 were men. About one-fifth had been admitted to an ICU.
None of the studies looked at clotting risk among COVID-19 patients who had not received hospital treatment. So the findings do not speak to DVT or PE risk among such patients, said Ay, although “it seems that the risk of clots is low in patients with a mild clinical course of COVID-19.”

Early in the pandemic, it became clear that blood clot risk seemed elevated in patients with COVID-19 compared to other diseases. To prevent clotting, “physicians worldwide intensified dosing of blood thinners for COVID-19 patients,” Ay said.
This created another potential problem, however, since blood thinners increase the risk of bleeding.
The study authors hope their review will offer clinicians more insight into clotting risk profiles, offering guidance as to which patients truly need preventive clot treatment, Ay said.
As to why COVID-19 might drive up clotting risk in the first place, Ay said experts can only speculate based on available data.
“First, the clinical course in such patients is often severe, which by itself increases the thrombosis [clotting] risk,” he said. “Second, researchers found that COVID-19 interacts with the blood clotting system and the blood vessels, which might explain the increased risk in those patients.”
Dr. Gregg Fonarow is director of the University of California, Los Angeles Cardiomyopathy Center. He offered some additional specifics regarding that interaction.
“The virus SARS-CoV-2 — which causes COVID-19 — has been shown to directly invade the cells that line blood vessels, endothelial cells,” he noted. “Endothelial injury can lead to venous thrombosis.”
In addition, extended bed rest or the placement of venous catheters during treatment for COVID-19 can also increase the risk for venous thrombosis, Fonarow noted.
The study results were published online recently in Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

It turns out rapper Cardi B may be inadvertently responsible for causing the term #DontBelieveArmenia to trend on Twitter this week.
After the hashtag suddenly appeared for U.S. users in the social media service’s trending section, questions were raised over how exactly the term originated.
Some suggested that the hashtag could be linked to a foreign influence operation, aimed at creating anti-Armenian animus.
“I still don’t understand at all what value trending topics is supposed to bring to Twitter, and it’s very obviously the low hanging fruit to eliminate if the company wanted to stem propaganda and influence operations on the site,” reporter Kevin Collier wrote.

Analysis of the trending topic reveals countless photographs of deceased children alongside messages concerning the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The two countries have repeatedly clashed as of late in the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh, raising concerns among the international community over what could escalate into an all-out war.
But a significant portion of the #DontBelieveArmenia tweets also include references to Cardi B. The reason appears to stem from a recent Instagram story in which the rapper promoted a fundraiser for the country to her more than 76 million followers.
Nearly all of the tweets that mention Cardi B and include the hashtag are identical, using the exact same phrasing to denounce the rapper.
“Hey, @iamcardib delete your story about supporting armenia,” the tweets say. “First search on internet, then share!”
The Daily Dot reached out to Twitter to inquire whether the hashtag had trended authentically or if inauthentic behavior had been detected but did not receive a reply.
While the origins of the tweet phrasing are still unclear, at least some users appeared to be engaging in “copypasta.” The tactic, which is often used in a joking manner, involves a large number of users sharing the exact same text.
The influx of tweets appeared to eventually catch the attention of Cardi B herself, who responded to criticisms of her support for Armenia in a series of tweets on Tuesday.
“I’m so sorry,” Cardi B said. “We did not do our research.”
In a voice recording attached to the tweet, the rapper explained how she had shared news of the fundraiser at the behest of an Armenian consultant who was helping her sell a property.
“He was very in distress because he’s saying there’s a lot of terrible genocides going on in his country,” Cardi B said.
The rapper added that she had woken up to countless tweets from Azerbaijani users who were outraged over her apparent support for Armenia.
“My wish is that both the countries would just be at peace,” she said.
Cardi B also responded directly to one user who accused her of supporting terrorism.
“Stfu I don’t support terrorism. I literally posted it for my friend with out doing no research on what’s going on,” the rapper said. “I’m sorry about that. I don’t like war. I don’t like conflicts between two countries period cause I hate innocent people being affected by it.”

Cardi B is not the only celebrity to weigh in on the overseas conflict in recent days. Other rappers including Xzibit and The Game have also used their platforms to express support for Armenia, although their endorsements do not appear to have produced the same coordinated response as Cardi B’s did.
Less than an hour ago, the world learned about the tragic passing of music legend Eddie Van Halen, who died this morning at 65 years old after a years-long battle with throat cancer. Van Halen has influenced generations of musicians, rock and beyond, so as news of his death spread, the music world reacted to the terrible news.

This summer, the NBA staged an unprecedented work stoppage in the middle of the playoffs in Orlando as a response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man from Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Bucks were at the center of that walkout and led the way for the rest of the league to join their effort to bring awareness to a situation that has become all too familiar in American life.
Together with the league, they helped form a social justice coalition that was designed to fight racial inequity from an institutional standpoint and start a media campaign that would educate the public about the grim facts of inequality and its effects around the country.
One facet of that plan included using team-owned NBA arenas as voting locations in the coming elections in November. Many teams signed off on that idea, but now the Bucks, which were pivotal in enacting this initiative, are apparently rescinding their agreement to use Fiserv Forum as a voting center, citing threats of legal action from the state’s Republican party.

Election Commission Executive Director Claire Woodall-Vogg made the announcement Tuesday morning after a threat of a legal challenge from the Wisconsin Republican Party.
“Unfortunately, the addition of these two sites could be legally challenged due to a recent court ruling, and we don’t want to do anything that could risk a city of Milwaukee voter’s ballot being counted,” Woodall-Vogg said. “We want residents of Milwaukee to feel complete and unwavering confidence that their ballot will be counted in the election, and this action reflects that commitment.”
In a statement, the Bucks confirmed this decision, and stressed that they are “committed to encouraging and educating people to vote.”
As an offshoot of LeBron’s More Than A Vote campaign, the idea of using NBA arenas as voting sites is an effort to counteract widespread voter suppression tactics that disproportionately target minority groups. Many arenas are centrally located and readily accessible to help avoid overcrowding and long wait times on election day. The majority of voters in Milwaukee vote in person, and a list of 13 other early voting sites can be found here.
If there’s anything we’ve all learned from 2020, it’s that it’s important to take care of your mental health. October 10th is World Mental Health Day. As we take time to recognize all the ways mental illness touches people around the world, it’s important to take a look at what’s going on at home.
More families and schools are putting an emphasis on social-emotional learning, which is great news. It’s important for us to develop children’s understanding of mental health and mental illness from an early age. A lot of that work happens at home, and that feels like a big responsibility.
Those conversations don’t come naturally or easily to every family, however. A lot of people feel out of their depth when it comes to communicating these important subjects to their children. Thankfully, there are many tools that can help you address issues of mental and health and mental illness with children.
