Dave Chappelle’s “8:46” | Know Your Meme

About

Dave Chappelle’s “8:46” is a 2020 standup comedy special performed by American comedian Dave Chappelle and produced by Netflix. The special focuses on the police brutality against Black Americans and the killing of George Floyd. The special’s title is a reference to the amount of time former police officer Derek Chauvin’s kneeled on George Floyd’s death. It was later named YouTube’s top trending video of the year.

History

On June 6th, 2020, Dave Chappelle held the “Dave Chappelle & Friends: A Talk with Punchlines” event at the Wirrig Pavilion in Yellow Springs, Ohio. 100 people attended the event, which producers held outside, abiding social distancing.

On June 11th, Netflix released the comedy special on YouTube without prior . The post received more than 29 million views in less than six months.

Reception

“8:46” received mostly positive reviews. For Vanity Fair, Jordan Hoffman wrote, “Can a comedy set win a Pulitzer? Dave Chappelle’s surprise Netflix special is called 8:46, for the unthinkable amount of time George Floyd was pinned by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The show, which bypassed the streamer itself to go straight to YouTube, is atypical even for this unusual performer, and is more of an eloquent volcano of social criticism than a typical set. His storytelling and natural charisma make the monologue riveting, enraging, inspirational and, to those who still don’t understand what’s going on, informative.”

On December 1st, 2020, YouTube announced that Chappelle’s special was the top trending video of the year. Speaking to the Verge, Earnest Pettie, an analyst on YouTube’s culture and trends team said, “More than anything else, it sets the tone for how there was this thing that was happening in culture and in the world, and how people created content that reflected this moment that was happening. Viewers swarmed it.”

Why Did Scott Atlas Resign? What He Said in His Resignation Letter

In a resignation letter that he posted on Nov. 30 to his Twitter account, Atlas attempted to frame his time in the Trump administration as time spent fighting for the working people of America.

He said that his “advice was always focused on minimizing all the harms from both the pandemic and the structural policies themselves, especially to the working class and the poor.”

“I sincerely wish the new team all the best as they guide the nation through these trying, polarized times,” Atlas continued, apparently referencing the Biden administration’s incoming coronavirus task force.

Atlas’ resignation comes as more promising news continues to roll out regarding various vaccines and their effectiveness, even as the virus surges across the country because of an increase in indoor gatherings.

Doja Cat And Roddy Ricch Lead The ‘Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List For 2021

Forbes has rolled out their annual 30 Under 30 list, and their 2021 class is headlined by some familiar names.

One of the artists featured is Roddy Ricch, who was highlighted for his success in music: In 2020, he won his first Grammy and performed well on the charts with Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial and “The Box.” The piece also discussed Ricch investing in Compton real estate and working on a foundation to promote financial literacy in the city. “Investing in Compton just felt like my duty,” Ricch said.

Also earning a nod was Doja Cat, who had a breakout year in 2020 thanks to “Say So” and her Hot Pink album. Other artists on the list include Lil Baby, Murda Beatz, Ingrid Andress, Gabby Barrett, Polo G, Brent Faiyaz, Conan Gray, G Herbo, Ava Max, London On Da Track, and Saweetie.

The publication explained the eligibility requirements of the list, writing, “To be eligible, candidates must be under age 30 as of December 31, 2019, not have appeared on a previous Under 30 list, and show their ability to propel the future of the music industry.” They also noted that this year’s judges were Taylor Swift, Warner Music Group creative officer Mike Caren, singer-songwriter Jill Scott, and Nija Charles.

Lil Baby’s Birthday Party At A Packed Club Draws Criticism From Houston’s Mayor

Despite the ongoing pandemic several rappers and their fans have continued to congregate in large groups. Perhaps they’re playing into the mystique of rappers as invulnerable superheroes (disproven several times this year), or they’re just young and naive, but even seeing many of their own being shamed online has yet to prevent young stars from wanting to be seen — or their fans from wanting to see them. Lil Baby, who recently threw a Thanksgiving Eve birthday bash at Spire nightclub in Houston, Texas, is the latest to draw criticism, this time from no less an authority than Houston’s mayor.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke with the local news, expressing his displeasure at seeing videos from it cropping up all over social media and revealing that the safety precautions advertised on the flyer weren’t being observed at all. “It’s very disturbing,” he chided. The way I look at it, it’s quite selfish on their part. There are many businesses and managers that are doing the right thing, and I commend them. But there are some who are simply ignoring the healthcare precautions and the protocols.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

While the Spire owners maintained that they were below legal occupancy and even cut Lil Baby’s appearance short when fans rushed the stage, by then, it was likely that the damage had been done. With COVID-19 cases once again spiking across the nation, practicing safety protocols will make all the difference in how long the pandemic continues — and how many lives are lost until then.

Tech Tuesday newsletter: Ajit Pai—baby, bye, bye, bye

Hey readers, welcome to this week’s ‘Tech Tuesday’ Internet InsiderThe week started with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announcing he will step down on Jan. 20, so where does that leave the FCC moving forward?

Here’s what we’ve got on deck today:

  • The post-Ajit Pai FCC is still uncertain
  • With Trump out, how does Biden feel about TikTok?

Ajit Pai Leaving FCC

BREAK THE INTERNET

Ajit Pai announces he will step down from FCC on Jan. 20

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai announced on Monday that he will step down from the agency on Inauguration Day.

Pai, who drew the ire from many activist and tech advocacy groups for his shepherding of the repeal of net neutrality rules, will follow tradition by stepping down. Pai was appointed as the head of the agency by President Donald Trump in January 2017.

The chair of the FCC traditionally steps down from the commission, even if their term is not completed, when a new president comes into power.

President-elect Joe Biden will be able to select a new chairperson for the commission. However, there is still uncertainty as to what the makeup of the FCC will look like moving forward.

The Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled to vote this week on whether to advance Nathan Simington, Trump’s pick for the FCC, to a full vote in Congress’ upper chamber.

Simington is a controversial choice because of his connections to Trump’s social media executive order. That order targets Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law that shields websites from being held liable over what is posted on them by third parties. But his potential appointment to the FCC has more implications.

With Pai leaving, Simington joining the FCC would leave the agency with a 2-2 deadlock along party lines. The FCC is supposed to have five members, including the chairman, which is chosen by the president. Three of the commissioners are supposed to be from the president’s party, with the other two the opposite party.

If Republicans maintain control of the Senate after the Georgia runoff elections, they could conceivably hold off on confirming Biden’s choice to fill out the agency, keeping it deadlocked. Doing so would prevent any party-line votes—such as restoring net neutrality.

SPONSORED

There is a weird stigma around gifts you can’t physically give but the truth is, people LOVE getting gift cards. And in the year 2020, when shopping in stores is highly risky and the postal service is trying its best, now is our chance to normalize digital gift cards and do away with impersonal last-minute gifts. No one needs another itchy sweater, Aunt Brenda!

If that’s not incentive enough, in honor of Giving Tuesday, GiftCards.com is donating 6% of the total amount loaded onto the Giving Good gift card line to the charity featured on the card. Each Giving Good card is redeemable at a handful of curated restaurants and stores, and gives back to non-profits like Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, or Make-A-Wish. Not only are you helping a friend or family member with a gift card, you’re also helping others in need.

OVERLORDS

With Trump out, how does Biden feel about TikTok?

While President Donald Trump‘s feud with TikTok may be winding down without a second term for his administration, President-elect Joe Biden has also raised concerns with the immensely popular app.

Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok over the summer eventually culminated in the app coming to an agreement to partner with Oracle and Walmart. But in the meantime, it faced imposed deadlines for a ban that were extended several times.

While Trump seemed focused on TikTok ahead of the election, his interest seems to have waned. Meanwhile, Biden has also not said much about the app.

Here’s why it matters: The president-elect mentioned the debacle on his campaign trail in September.

“I think that it’s a matter of genuine concern that TikTok, a Chinese operation, has access to over 100 million young people particularly in the United States of America,” Biden said, according to Reuters.

Representatives for Biden did not return a request for comment by the Daily Dot. However, a technology advisor on Biden’s transition team told CNBC that it was “too early to say” what Biden’s views on the app were.

Essentially, it remains to be seen how exactly things will move forward for TikTok with Biden in the White House.

A prank site for a 2024 presidential run by Donald Trump

LOLITICS

Someone grabbed a ‘Trump 2024’ website before Trump could

It appears that President Donald Trump has been trolled after two pranksters secured the web domain ahead of a possible Trump 2024 campaign.

Trump, who has refused to concede after losing the 2020 election to President-elect Joe Biden, is the favored candidate among Republicans for a 2024 run.

Although the president uses the website “donaldjtrump.com” for his political endeavors, the “donaldjtrump2024.com” domain will undoubtedly be stumbled upon by fans of Trump so long as rumors of another presidential run persist.

The Good Liars, the name for a comedy group run by Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler, took credit for the prank in a video posted to social media.

Here’s why it matters: The 2020 election had its fair share of website domain trolling. In August, Biden tweeted a link to KeepAmericaGreat.com that highlighted Trump’s “broken” promises.

The latest prank comes not long after Trump begrudgingly gave his support to the presidential transition despite continuing to falsely claim that the race was stolen due to widespread voter fraud.

Why Neera Tanden gets memed for being a ‘Xanax and wine’ mom

neera tanden

Analysis

Because President-elect Joe Biden is expecting either a divided or oppositional Senate when he takes office, you can imagine his picks for top-level positions have undergone serious scrutiny, as to avoid any last-minute surprises that might sink a nomination in a combustible climate.

So it goes to follow that Biden doesn’t object to any of the public behaviors of the people he’s chosen, which means, congrats to everyone, late-night binge-tweeting doesn’t disqualify you anymore for a cabinet-level spot.

Biden tabbed Neera Tanden to be his director of the Office of Budget and Management. Tanden is a longtime Democratic loyalist, so it’s not surprising she was picked. But now everyone is enthused to have a person working adjacent to the White House they can goad into a Twitter fight at 4am. For Tanden never logs off.

Though the tweets are often deleted in the morning, Tanden has often engaged in back-and-forths online when it seems like she might have something better to do.

An infamous exchange occurred in 2019 when Tanden got in a spat with Southern Poverty Law Center researcher Hannah Gais, who told Tanden off at nearly 2am. Even the New York Times declared her personality on the platform as “bellicose.”

While Tanden is facing criticism from Republicans for being part of the liberal establishment of the Democratic party, that assessment is conjured out of the ether, ignorable nonsense, given that the left of the party genuinely dislikes her from her time as a Clinton surrogate against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in 2016. And given her penchant for tweeting away late-night without regard to how it will look in the morning, she’s been dubbed online as a “Xanax and wine” mom, the kind of youthful suburban woman in Lululemons who after her Pure Barre class enjoys anti-anxiety meds and a glass of lightly chilled Chablis.

There’s no proof of Tanden drinking (save for one wine picture on Twitter) or using prescription medication, and even some who have used the meme have said it’s more of metaphor than an accusation.

Still, tweets that Tanden’s sent in the past four years—especially those ones after hours—often earn that kind of reply. And when she was nominated, the leftist online discourse did not forget it.

Tanden for her part routinely deletes the tweets she sends after hours.

So while many are critiquing the choice, there is one upside. For those afraid that the news cycle will slow down after Trump leaves office, welcome to “OMB: After Hours.”

Helena Bonham Carter Is On Board With Calls For Netflix To Add A ‘Fiction’ Disclaimer To ‘The Crown’

Helena Bonham Carter has added her support to recent calls for Netflix’s The Crown to include a disclaimer that emphasizes the show is largely fiction despite being based on real events. Carter, who plays Princess Margaret on the royal family drama, revealed her thoughts on Monday’s episode of The Crown: The Official Podcast where she agreed with the sentiment that Netflix needs to make it clear to viewers that the show has taken creative liberties with its depiction of palace intrigue. The actress feels there should be a distinction between “our version” and the “real version.” Via The Guardian:

“It is dramatised. I do feel very strongly, because I think we have a moral responsibility to say, ‘Hang on guys, this is not … it’s not a drama-doc, we’re making a drama.’ So they are two different entities.”

She called the research by the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, “amazing”, adding: “That is the proper documentary. That is amazing and then Peter switches things up and juggles.”

Bonham Carter’s opinion arrives on the heels of UK culture secretary Oliver Dowden announcing his plans to apply pressure on Netflix to include the disclaimer. “Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact,” Dowden told the Mail on Sunday. As for why the British government is suddenly concerned with the Netflix drama, the show’s recent season includes an unflattering portrayal of Prince Charles and his treatment of the late Princess Diana during their courtship and marriage.
