On December 31st, 2017, the Fox television network presented “New Year’s Eve With Steve Harvey: Live From Times Square,” a New Year’s eve countdown program hosted by comedian and television personality Steve Harvey. During the broadcast, Harvey was outfitted in a large white coat, a hood that resembled a wetsuit and a round, white hat (video below).

People reacted to Harvey’s outfit in real time, commenting on Twitter about his appearance. That night, Twitter user @TheLesterLee tweeted a picture from the special and the caption ”Steve Harvey looks like a Batman villain that has captured Times Square and will kill civilians unless Batman answers all of his riddles.” The post (shown below, left) received more than 4,400 retweets and 11,000 likes in two days. Twitter user @SheHatesJAcoby tweeted, “Steve Harvey dressed like your Uncle who just won his divorce.” Within two days, The post (shown below, center received more than 4,700 retweets and 11,600 likes.
Additionally, people began photoshopping the image. Twitter user @drewdavis71 manipulated the photo to make Harvey’s face appear smaller. He captioned the post (shown below, right) “Steve Harvey bundled like a mofo,” and received more than 7,700 retweets and 23,000 likes in two days.
That night, Twitter user @MrFilmkritik compared Harvey to actress Olivia Pope. He tweeted a side-by-side comparison of the two and added the caption “Steve Harvey out there looking like Olivia Pope.” The (shown below) received more than 15,000 retweets and 46,000 likes in two days.
Several news outlets posted about the reaction Harvey’s outfit, including The Root, ABC, Bustle, Uproxx, International Business Times, The Mercury News,Hip Hop Wired, and more.

Four years ago, The Weeknd said that he would not make music about politics. But after a full year of tragic global events, the singer can’t help but center his upcoming music around some of 2020’s unfortunate-yet-memorable moments. After his album <em>After Hours</em> was snubbed by the Grammys, the singer is already starting to work on his next LP — and it’s inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests, the pandemic, and the tensions in the U.S. election.
The Weeknd opened up about his next album’s plans in an upcoming 100-page zine for Tmrw. In his interview, the singer offered some insight into his musical inspirations:
“I have been more inspired and creative during the pandemic than I might normally be while on the road…The pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the tensions of the election have mostly created a sense of gratitude for what I have and closeness with the people near me.”
Elsewhere in the piece, The Weeknd added that he thinks After Hours is a way of culminating his decade in the music industry. “I was laser focused back then and I’m laser focused right now,” he said. “This has been the story of my 20s. I feel like I spent the last 10 years creating a sound and most of my career I’ve either been running away from it or duplicating it. After Hours was the perfect piece of art for me to show my tenure in the industry.”
His discussions about infusing politics into his music marks a drastic shift just a few years earlier in his career. Back in 2016, the singer opened up about his support for the Black Lives Matter protests, saying that he donated a large sum of money but wasn’t ready for his music to reflect his political views. “I wish I could make music about politics,” he said in a 2016 interview with V Man Magazine. “I feel like it’s such an art and a talent that I admire tremendously, but when I step into the studio I step out of the real world, and it’s therapeutic. It’s an escape, but recently it’s been very hard to ignore, and it’s also been very distracting. Maybe you’ll hear it in my voice, but it is not my forté.”

On December 24th, 2020, Redditor jacob_3108 shared the image with the caption “everyone: 2021 is not going to be as bad as 2020 / 2021 January” in the /r/memes subreddit. The post received more than 78,000 points (94% upvoted) and 480 comments in less than one week (shown below, left).
That day, Redditor lucy46290 shared the image in the /r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit. They titled the thread for the post, “I cringe at this.” The image received more than 48,000 points (91% upvoted) and 420 comments in less than one week (shown below, left).
The following day, on December 25th, Twitter user @govinuts tweeted the image with the caption, “if ‘uncomfortable’ was a picture.” The post received more than 7,100 likes and 870 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center). There’s never a shortage of drama or scandals taking place in the YouTube community, since being somewhat controversial is often part of the gig for top content creators. In recent years, many have put out apology, breakup, or “exposed” videos in order to increase views.
For vlogger and gamer Craig Thompson aka Mini Ladd, his scandal is one that goes beyond the scope of a typical YouTube apology video.
The 25-year-old has been accused of messaging underage fans in a suggestive and flirtatious manner for months. Two of them, Ash and Halley, went forward in June of 2020 to share their experiences with his alleged predatory behavior. The interactions took place in 2016 and 2017, when Mini Ladd was in his 20s and the girls were teenagers.
They also both said that he attempted to manipulate them with his online presence and his mental health struggles to keep them quiet.
What did Mini Ladd say in his apology?
In the opening of his now-viral video, Mini Ladd said that he would not shy away from addressing the scandal head-on. He claimed that he was going against the wishes of his PR team by being so candid with his 5.23 million subscribers.
“I want to apologize for the things that I’ve done,” he shared. He also clarified that he wasn’t putting the video out to make people feel sorry for him.

“I don’t want this video to be excused as an excuse or victimizing myself or anything like that. I just want to give you guys my thoughts. This is no more PR teams, no more anything like that. This is just Craig. This isn’t Mini Ladd,” he continued. “This is Craig talking, and I want to be as transparent as possible.”
Mini Ladd then explained that he would be speaking about two people who were underage when he began messaging them: Halley and Ash. He shared that his interactions with the two took place at around the same time.
“A lot of people think that these people were random fans that I got in contact with. Both Halley and Ash, these were people that were my friends,” he said. “Halley, I’ve known for a long time, since maybe 2013 or 2014. Halley was one of my Twitch mods.”
Mini Ladd said that Halley was an effective moderator on Twitch and that she often helped him out on the gaming service. He said that their Twitch connection eventually became a friendship.
“She was someone that I could go to with my problems,” he continued. “We became close because we both had our issues. It’s not my place to say what’s going on with her, but she’s someone who has helped me out a lot.”

The content creator said that he added Halley on Snapchat when she was 16, but their messages were entirely platonic at first. At the time, his intentions on the photo app were simply to maintain a streak (which is when there are consecutive, uninterrupted days of sending photos).
“This isn’t when I was making any remarks towards her. This is just where I talked to all of my friends. I was that guy that had streaks, and I wanted to make sure that our streaks were good,” he explained. “Back in 2015, that’s kind of what people did.”

Mini Ladd said that he began to send flirty messages to Halley in 2016 when she was 17. At the time, he was 21.
“And that’s not OK, like, and I’m aware of that. So with Halley, and both with Ash, I sent the messages around this time,” he said. “And I understand what I’m going to say next is quite taboo online, but if this is my way of putting all my cards on the table and telling you guys what happened, I feel like I need to say it. “

The Twitch streamer shared that he had contemplated ending his life at around this time, and that he allegedly told Halley this when she was considering coming forward with his predatory messages.
“The reason I did what I did and there was even a message where I said this is because what I said there is true,” he continued. “I did try to end my life in 2017. I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m not looking for anything. That’s not what this is about. This is telling you guys the reason, and I want you to understand the headspace that I was in.”

He said that he was being “selfish” and he wasn’t considering the “repercussions” of his actions. He noted that his actions were “stupid.”
“I just wasn’t thinking and I’ve regretted it since,” he said. “For both Halley and Ash, I’m really sorry.”
Mini Ladd then clarified the details of his relationship with Ash. Unlike his multi-year friendship with Halley, Mini Ladd said that he only knew Ash for a short time. They initially connected from mutual friends on Twitch.

After flirting with her online, Mini Ladd learned from a friend that Ash was planning on publicly exposing his actions. That’s when he asked the mutual friend to tell Ash about his mental health struggles, in an attempt to dissuade her from going forward.
“The stuff I sent to her is just not OK either. That’s not what I wanted. You know, she was someone that I really did call my friend and it sucks that I let her down like that,” Mini Ladd said.
He added that he “completely regret[s]” sending the messages to guilt her, but that they came from a place of fear.
“I just love my job so much that I didn’t want it to go away,” he said in his video.
The YouTuber then apologized to the two for putting his issues on them.
“I’m sorry, guys. You were my friends, and I failed you. I was only thinking of myself, and I was stupid,” he remarked. “I wish I could take it all back.”

Never one to shy away from a pop culture moment that lets him embrace his inner nerd in the process, Jack Black has put his own spin on the now iconic music from <em>The Mandalorian</em> for a new TikTok video. While this latest musical joint doesn’t feature Black dancing in a Speedo to “WAP,” it does have the Tenacious D frontman busting out a rockin’ rendition of Mando’s theme while slapping on a Boba Fett helmet, and <em>Star Wars</em> fans are loving it.

Black’s video arrives on the heel of another viral, musical moment from the hit bounty-hunting series. On Christmas Day, Robert Rodriguez dropped a behind-the-scenes video where he jams out on a guitar with Baby Yoda. Considering the little guy is a massive pop culture juggernaut in a tiny package, the video of Grogu bopping and grooving to Rodriguez’s guitar work quickly dominated Twitter.
As for the epic Mandalorian theme, that would be the work of composer Ludwig Göransson, who had the daunting task of creating a new Star Wars sound that could go toe-to-toe with the classic sound created by John Williams. Considering Göransson scored an Emmy for his work, and the theme is popping up left and right in viral videos like Black’s, we’d say he nailed it thanks to a unique blend of baroque recorder solos, drums, and a full-on sympathy that seamlessly mashed together the spaghetti Western and sci-fi genres.
