Bartenders Rave About Their Favorite Hard-To-Find Scotch Whiskies

There are three kinds of Scotch whisky drinkers. First, you have the casual drinkers — who enjoy trying new things but don’t take it all too seriously. They might have a bottle of Glenmorangie 10, Dewar’s, or Monkey Shoulder on the shelf that someone left at a party. Maybe they even have a bottle of Caol Ila 12 or Ardbeg 10. The second group takes whisky a little too seriously, collecting rare bottles without actually opening them. They keep things for “special occasions” that never seem to arrive soon enough.

We like the last group. These folks mix and match — buying rare bottles when they have the cash but also appreciating less expensive expressions. The type of drinkers who know how to savor the good stuff and how to share.

Bartenders are usually these sorts. They have access to more rare whiskies than most regular people, but they also live for the “now” (generally speaking) and actually sip what they’ve got. So they know the drams that are worth tracking down and those that can’t match the hype. That’s why we asked a handful of our favorite bartenders to tell us their most-beloved hard-to-find bottles of Scotch whisky.

Highland Park Dark Origins

Highland Park

Cari Hah, formerly bar manager at Café Alcove in Los Angeles

Highland Park Dark Origins. A delicious rich single malt with dark character, it is aged in 80% first-fill sherry cask with 60% being European oak and 20% American oak. This scotch is chocolatey, malty, with slight notes of black currant. The peat adds to the character — being both smoky and sweet — making this whisky as hard to put down as it is to find.

Bunnahabhain 25

Bunnahabhain

Demetrëa Dewald, lead bartender at Bar Mateo at Zinc Café in Los Angeles

Bunnahabhain 25-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is truly a beautiful Islay Scotch that can even win over those who only drink peated Scotch. Smooth and creamy with a touch of sweetness and hint of spice. Bunnahabhain 18 is a masterpiece as well, but does not touch the complexities of the 25 year.

If you have the privilege of drinking this gem the experience will be like none other. Notes of caramel and cardamom, delicate and soft — every sip should be savored.

The Macallan No. 6

The Macallan

Hayden Miller, head bartender at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila in Miami

The Macallan No 6. A premier tier from The Macallan with a carefully selected sherry finish that makes it worth every special occasion for which it may fill your glass.

The Balvenie 21-Year Portwood

The Balvenie

Alex Tack, bartender at Rex 1516 in Philadelphia

The Balvenie 21-year Portwood is worth every penny… if one can afford it. I’m not sure if it’s scarce so much as it is pricey. I was fortunate enough to try it once, and I still think of it often. The natural stone fruit notes of The Balvenie mesh beautifully with the notes from the port barrels. When things are that perfect, they sort of can’t be done justice with words, which I suppose explains why they usually have such high price tags.

Ardbeg Supernova

Ardbeg

Andy Printy, beverage director at Chao Baan in St. Louis

Hard to find, but I’m a huge fan of Ardbeg’s 2019 Supernova. Islay by region, but it’s unlike any single malt I’ve ever had. Heavily peated, but just under the smoke is a ton of toffee, aniseed, menthol, and ash.

The finish brings you right back to the medicinal peat and a touch of butter.

The Macallan Gran Reserva 12

The Macallan

Gavin Humes, bartender at Scratch|Bar & Kitchen in Encino, California

The Macallan Gran Reserva 12. It’s maybe not too hard to find if you’re shopping in Asia, but in the States, it’s a pretty rare pull. It’s a delicious Scotch that has wonderfully complex notes of sherry.

It’s not inexpensive, but worth every penny — assuming you can get your hands on it.

Ardbeg Traigh Bhan

Ardbeg

Brandon “Habi” Habenstein, bartender at The Kitchen & Bar at Bardstown Bourbon Co. in Bardstown, Kentucky

Ardbeg Traigh Bhan just had its second annual release this year with a 19-year-old Islay Single Malt that was aged in both bourbon and sherry casks. They’ve done this before with at least one other label, their Uigeadail. The sherry barrel brings an intense, dried fruit presence that gets merged with the caramel and baking spices so often found in bourbon. But then you have the intense peated scotch tying all the flavors together.

Traigh Bhan is shaping up to be the most difficult Ardbeg to find.

Cadenhead’s Bruichladdich 22

Cadenhead

Courtney Cantrell, bartender and assistant manager for Old Hickory Whiskey Bar in Pensacola, Florida

When I ponder what exactly hard-to-find whisky means to me, I’m drawn less-so to those that are, you know, a 25-year Scotch with a familiar name, and more-so towards those like Cadenhead’s Bruichladdich 22. Cadenhead, based in Campbeltown, Scotland and Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, basically purchases barrels from distilleries and allows them to age for as long as they deem necessary until the whisky is “remarkable, not marketable.” These single casks whiskies are bottled in Campbeltown and offer various ranges and ages. I find myself to be quite the peat-head, so the Bruichladdich 22 offering from Cadenhead provides the individuality and peat intensity that I find both charming and affordable.

Grand Old Parr 12

Old Parr

Freddy Yanez, bartender at Unreserved Beer Garden in Orlando

Grand Old Parr 12 years old, an amazing blend, imported by Diageo, is pretty popular overseas but hard to find in the US. The whisky has rich mineral and light peat notes make it a way to go for a long drink.

Writer’s Pick:

GlenDronach Parliament Sherry Cask 21

Glendronach

This 2011 release was launched because GlenDronach was beginning to gain in popularity and drinkers craved a special, new offering from the distillery. It’s named for the “Parliament of rooks” that call the distillery’s trees home, it’s a blend of whiskies aged in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherries.

Is Kim Kardashian Dating CNN’s Van Jones? Fans Certainly Ship This Couple

The CNN personality finalized his divorce from Jana Carter in 2019 after nearly 14 years of marriage, according to court documents obtained by The Blast. The pair have two children together and seemingly split on amicable terms.

“Divorce means the end of a marriage, not the end of a family. #FamilyForever,” he captioned a selfie with his ex-wife.

Following his divorce, Van appeared on The Wendy Williams Show, where the controversial talk show host noted, “You still wear your ring.”

He immediately snapped back, “You got something on your hand, too, so I ain’t talking about that.” He added, “I’m just saying … we can talk about your man.” Yikes!

For now, the rumor that Van and Kim are a couple is just that… a rumor. But needless to say, many fans are constantly watching for some sort of confirmation that they are, in fact, dating.

Trump Attorney Lin Wood Name Drops “Lizard Squad” In QAnon Supreme Court Tweet

As President Donald Trump prepared for his final month in office, one of his attorneys L. Lin Wood, who also represents Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, was stoking the QAnon fire for the future. Over the weekend, Wood, one of the attorneys behind Trump’s unsuccessful litigation to remain in power following the January 20th inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, continued to tweet about all the alleged pedophiles being harbored by the Supreme Court and the U.S. government.

After tweeting that Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts was allegedly “being blackmailed in a horrendous scheme involving rape & murder of children captured on videotape,” L. Lin Wood alleged that “10 of the world’s most well-known and ‘elite’ intelligence agencies” were hacked by the Lizard Squad. The hack resulted in securing of “blackmail files of rape & murder.” Wood also claims that the findings were given to actor Isaac Kappy, who committed suicide in 2019.

Unless you’re a QAnon loyalist, believing that a satanic cabal of pedophiles, cannibals and human traffickers rule the world, the “Lizard Squad” really took over the conversation, with many assuming the tweet meant actual lizard people hacking government databases.

However, some might remember the Lizard Squad as the hacker collective behind several massive DDoS attacks against video game companies in the mid-2010s. In 2014, they knocked on League of Legends, RuneScape, Riot Games and more offline. On Christmas of that year, the Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live that left both offline for most of the day.

The Lizard Squad has been known for other high-profile attacks on foreign countries, such as the time they knocked out North Korea’s government/ internet, and celebrities, including a threat to release naked photos of Taylor Swift.

So while the Lizard Squad is a real hacking group, they have not yet weighed in on whether or not there is any validity to Wood’s claims. According to Gizmodo, the group no longer exists.

Who Is Miss Moth on ‘The Masked Dancer’? Here’s What You Should Know

The Season 1 premiere of The Masked Dancer introduced viewers to 10 impeccably dressed contestants ready and rearing to showcase their finest moves.

Five contestants, Exotic Bird, Tulip, Hammerhead, Disco Ball, and Cricket, performed elaborate routines as part of the episode. While some turned heads with their exquisite displays — looking at you, Exotic Bird — some, like Disco Ball, were less successful. So, what can we expect from the rest of the cast? And, more importantly, who is Miss Moth?

Here are the first clues indicating who Miss Moth might be on ‘The Masked Dancer.’

Miss Moth has yet to make her debut on the TV program. However, she has already piqued viewers’ interest with her bold costume. As a video posted on the official Instagram account of the show reveals, Miss Moth always gravitates toward the spotlight.

“All I want for Christmas is you … with a side of salt!” reads the caption of another short video shared on The Masked Dancer Instagram page.

Her ornate attire, a crimson-colored outfit adorned with crystal applique and a hefty dash of glitter, serves as another clue.

To complete the look, she opted for intricate, leaf-shaped golden bangles, a tiara, a subtle, supportasse-style accessory worn around the back of her head, and an admiral blue wig.

Some ‘The Masked Dancer’ fans have already coined a few spot-on guesses.

Nicole Scherzinger, Christina Aguilera, and Skai Jackson are just some of the stars fans believe might be hiding under the beautiful disguise.

Nicole, Christina, and Skai are exceptional dancers with a distinctive sense of style and an extraordinary stage personality. It’s easy to see why Miss Moth’s costume and gestures would have reminded some viewers of the celebs.

Other names that came up in the discussions include “Salt” singer Ava Max, Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress Chelsea Peretti, and Cheryl James, aka Salt from Salt-N-Pepa.

A few fans believe that Miss Moth might have strong ties to the culinary industry. Mariah Carey, Angelina Jolie, and Rachael Ray are among the suspected celebs as well.

Season 1 of ‘The Masked Dancer’ features 10 celeb contestants.

The nine-episode-long event will see the members of Group A (aka Group Fire) go head to head with Group B (aka Group Ice) in the hope of winning the much-coveted Diamond Mask Trophy.

Show host Craig Robinson and the panelists, Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, and Ashley Tisdale, will be joined by guests like actress Cheryl Hines and Rob Lowe to guess the true identity of the expertly disguised stars.

The show might seem a bit more complicated than The Masked Dancer — and that’s because it is.

Unlike before, contestants will solely rely on their attire, dance moves, and the set design to drop strategic clues and help Ken, Paula, and co. to figure out who they are. They will get to say one word in each episode with their voice unmodulated — in a segment dubbed as “Word Up.”

Kim Kardashian Kanye West Divorce Rumors

Overview

Kim Kardashian Kanye West Divorce Rumors refers to reports that socialite and reality television star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West are discussing divorce after six years of marriage. The news stirred jokes about the couple’s rumored separation, as well as a bizarre rumor that West was having an affair with YouTuber Jeffree Star.

Background

On January 5th, 2021, the gossip website Page Six reported that “multiple sources” told them “divorce is imminent” for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The site reported that Kim was fed up with Kanye’s antics and wanted to follow more serious life pursuits such as becoming a lawyer and working on a prison reform campaign, and Kanye was unhappy with the reality-television lifestyle of the Kardashian family. West had previously tweeted that he was trying to get divorced in a July 2020 tweetstorm that was later deleted. A sticking point in their divorce was their $40 million California home, which Kanye owns but Kim wants, as it is the house their four children have grown up in.

Developments

After the rumor was posted online, social media users began making jokes about the pair’s supposedly imminent divorce. Twitter user @Chief44445 posted a Kombucha Girl meme about Kanye’s potential “divorce album,” gaining over 1,300 retweets and 10,000 likes (shown below, left). User @ukrhoe posted a still from Arrested Development about the divorce, gaining over 400 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, right).

Jeffree Star Rumor

After the rumor broke, TikTok user @RealAvaLouiise made a video alleging that Kanye West had been hooking up with a “famous male beauty guru.” Her source was a “big time LA lawyer” who supposedly met with Kim months prior when the divorce was brewing and learned this information.

When fans guessed she was talking about Jeffree Star, Louise signaled her approval, leading to the rumor that Kanye West was hooking up with Jeffree Star. This led to further memes about the rumor and caused Jeffree Star to trend on Twitter on January 6th. User @Pizza_Dad posted a Hey, Look At Us clip about the rumor, gaining over 2,000 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, top). User @fratboycevans posted a joke implying that Kris Jenner leaked the rumor to the media (shown below, bottom).
