On this day (2 October 1187 CE ), Sultan Salahuddin Ayubi liberated Jerusalem and ended 88 years of Crusader occupation.

Under Salahuddin Ayubi’s command, the Ayyubid army defeated the Crusaders at the decisive Battle of Hattin in 1187, and thereafter on Friday, 2 October wrested control of Palestine including the city of Jerusalem from the Crusaders.
