On the 10th and 11th June 1329, the famous battle of Pelekanon, today’s Maltepe, took place between the Ottomans and Byzantines. The Byzantine army under the then Emperor Andronikos III, known for his will to fight, wanted to conquer parts of the Ottoman Empire. But Emperor Andronikos III met with the then Sultan Orhan Gazi, the son of Osman Gazi and grandson of Ertugrul Gazi, the founders of the Ottoman Empire. Orhan Gazi was known for spending his entire life in the battlefields and opening up so many areas of Asia to Islam. Thus he was able to stop the advance of the Byzantines and emerge victorious from the battle. After this victory for Islam, the Byzantines should never again dare an attack on Islamic territory. generation_islam
