“Lose Control”, also known by its lyric Music Make You Lose Control, is a 2005 song by American rapper Missy Elliott featuring Ciara and Fatman Scoop. In 2020, the song gained significant popularity in memes, particularly as a part of the Dancing Triangle trend.

Origin

On May 27th, 2005, American rapper Missy Elliott released “Lose Control,” the first single from her album The Cookbook. The hip-hop single peaked at number three position of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA. On January 19th, 2017, the song was uploaded to Missy Elliott’s YouTube channel, where it received over 41 million views in three years. On Spotify, the song had over 107 million streams as of August 18th, 2020.

Starting in July 2019, the song started trending on TikTok in dance videos. The earliest viral dance TikTok using the song was posted by TikTok user katiefeeneyy on January 19th, 2019, and received over 582,700 likes in two years (shown below, left). The song became viral on the app after on July 16th, 2019, TikTok user aquajock_h2bro posted a dance video that received over 1.4 million likes in one year (shown below, center). On July 19th, 2019, popular TikTok user Charli D’Amelio posted a video using the song, which received over 636,400 likes in one year (shown below, right).



As of August 18th, 2020, over 140,000 videos using the song were posted on TikTok.

In memes, the song was primarily associated with the Dancing Triangle videos and partly with related IDK I’ve Never memes by extension. On February 11th, 2020, Twitter user @melancholyhill posted a Dancing Triangle video set to the song (shown below), gaining over 1.1 million views in six months and starting the trend.

In the following months, the song received spread via Dancing Triangle memes on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Following the viral spread, memes referencing the song appeared in various communities; for example, on May 29th, 2020, Redditor air-bonsai posted a Your Honor meme referencing the song that received over 41,400 upvotes in three months.
