At least 10 people were killed and 10 more injured in a shooting at a ballroom dance venue on Saturday night in Monterey Park, California.

Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a press conference Saturday night that officers arrived at the scene of a ballroom dance venue at 10:22 p.m.

“We have 10 that are deceased at the scene,” Meyer said, adding that at least 10 people had been taken to hospital with injuries that ranged from stable to critical. No other information was provided about the victims.

The suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding, Meyer said.

Monterey Park has a population of about 60,000 and is more than 65% Asian, according to 2020 data from the city’s website. Earlier on Saturday, it hosted a Lunar New Year celebration that extended through the weekend. Police officials said Sunday’s festivities would be canceled.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden has been briefed about the shooting.
