When Vanessa Fisher learned she was pregnant with her second child, she knew she wanted a natural childbirth.
The Texas mom and her husband, Nick, found out they were expecting a baby boy. At 38 weeks, a scan showed that their baby was in the breech position, where the butt or feet are positioned to come through the vaginal canal first instead of the head.
According to Scary Mommy, most babies settle into the headfirst position naturally between the 32nd and 36th weeks of pregnancy. Vanessa’s baby didn’t.
Vanessa wanted a C-section to be the last resort. She opted to have her doctor try to perform a procedure called external cephalic version to move the baby into the correct position manually, by pressing on Vanessa’s stomach and moving her unborn son by hand.
Luckily for the mom-to-be, it worked! Vanessa uploaded a video of the successful procedure to Facebook on December 19, 2017, where it quickly went viral with nearly 4 million views and over 27,000 shares.
“Dr. Cummings performs a successful External Cephalic Version [ECV] to turn our breech baby at 38 weeks,” she wrote in the caption. “Prior to the procedure, we attempted a number of other methods to turn the baby naturally. Ultimately, our goal is to avoid a cesarean section by any means possible.”
The couple announced via Facebook that their baby, Ashton Nathaniel Fisher, was born “healthy and handsome” on January 16, 2018.
