Mirza Muhammad Taraghay bin Shahrukh, better known as Ulugh Beg, was a Timurid sultan and an astronomer and mathematician.

During his rule, the Timurid Empire achieved the cultural peak of the Timurid Renaissance through his support and attention.

Samarkand was captured and given to Ulugh Beg by his father Shah Rukh.

Many scholars subsequently recognized Ulugh Beg as the most important observational astronomer from the 15th century.

He also built the Ulugh Beg Madrasah in Samarkand and Bukhara, transforming the cities into cultural centers of learning in Central Asia.

However, he was killed on the order of his rebellious son, Abdal Latif Mirza.
