Joaquin Phoenix Is Mortified By Aggressive Outtakes Of ‘Joker’ Shown On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Joaquin Phoenix was feeling awkward during his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The host surprised Joaquin by telling him that director Todd Phillips had sent over outtakes from the film.

It all started when the talk show host asked him if filming the dark content of the film was difficult for him. “It was a light set, you know?” Joaquin explained. “And Todd Phillips, the director, he’s really funny. Yeah, I feel almost guilty, but we had a great time.”

“It’s interesting that you say that,” Jimmy said before revealing that he had the film’s outtakes.

They then played a clip showing an irritated Joaquin ranting about “Larry” (cinematographer Lawrence Sher) ruining his concentration. “No, like, the constant whispering, just shut the [expletive] up, dude,” Joaquin says in the clip. “I’m trying to, like, find something real.”

Then he goes on to discuss a joke about him that circulated the set. “I know you started the [expletive] Cher thing, Larry, [expletive] making fun of me, like I’m a [expletive] diva. It’s not even an insult. Cher, really? Singer, actor, dancer, fashion icon? How is that an [expletive] insult?”

Joaquin looked shocked at the footage. “This is so embarrassing,” he said.

“Look, sometimes movies get intense because you’re a lot of people in a small space and you’re trying to find something so you can feel intense,” he explained. “But that was supposed to be private. I’m a little embarrassed. I’m sorry about that. I’m sorry you guys had to see that.”

Jimmy tried making light of it, but Joaquin stood his ground. “There’s no excuse for that. You shouldn’t talk to people [like that].”

Joaquin tried to lighten things up. “Let me think about this a bit more. My publicist will issue a formal statement tomorrow.”

“Can we move on? …I should probably publicly apologize to Larry,” he added. Then he defended his actions. “The thing is, though. I am sorry, but he did whisper, like, constantly while we were trying to work and sometimes it’s really hard to find the emotion that you’re after,” he explained. “So it was wrong of me, I’m sorry, but he shouldn’t have done it.”
