Most famed for hosting the controversial talk show Jerry Springer for over 26 years, Springer further served as the mayor of Cincinnati in 1977 and briefly hosted America’s Got Talent and Judge Jerry. His podcast, The Jerry Springer Podcast, had its final episode in December of last year.
A spokesperson for the family told TMZ that Jerry, real name Gerald, had a “brief illness” and died peacefully in his Chicago home this morning.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, spokesman for the family, told WLWT — where Jerry used to work as an anchor.
“He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on,” the statement continued. The family have asked that donations or “acts of kindness” be made in lieu of flowers.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Katie.
