In Australia we get a bit angsty when discussing migration at times. In this column I try to show what type of visas migrants are on, discuss which types of migrants I see as extremely unlikely to decline in the foreseeable future. I started my discussion by putting the current narrative about record high migration intakes into context. Average out the four years since the pandemic and compare it with the four years before the pandemic and you see that we actually operate on a lower migration intake. The outlier year is explained by pent-up demand for international education and won’t be repeated. That narrative isn’t nearly as much fun as a fearmongering narrative of Australia being overrun. That said, the same challenges of adding housing stock very much remains.
