How to Watch UEFA Champions League

  • The UEFA Champions League competition is arguably soccer’s best tournament not named the World Cup.
  • Play finally resumes August 7 after being on pause since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Champions League features the top professional teams from Europe—including England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga, and Italy’s Serie A—in a mammoth 32-team competition.
  • The Champions League knockout rounds involve the first and second place finishers from each of eight four-team groups. It goes from a Round of 16 to quarterfinals, semifinals, and a must-watch final match.
  • Though Manchester City, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich all need to close out their final Round of 16 matches, they’re among the favorites to win. (Champions League odds also have Atletico Madrid and PSG in the top five.)
  • All the remaining matches, including the final, will be played in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • The quarterfinals start on August 12, with one a day at 3pm ET through the 15th.
  • The semifinals are scheduled for August 18 and 19, and the final will be August 23.
  • The coronavirus pandemic hit in the midst of the Round of 16, but not before Atletico Madrid knocked off defending champions Liverpool.
  • Round of 16 matchups that are still to be decided: Manchester City vs. Real Madrid, Barcelona vs. Napoli, Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea, and Juventus vs. Lyon.
  • CBS picked up rights to Champions League broadcasts in the U.S., meaning you’ll want access to CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access to catch all the Champions League action.

How to stream Champions League Matches with CBS All Access

If you want access to all the Champions League matches remaining this season, you’ll want to get CBS All Access. (The TV deal runs through 2024, so it will be an essential item in your soccer streaming arsenal.)

CBS All Access is the network’s official entry into the streaming arena, and set the tone for other major networks launching their own streaming services. (Looking at you, Peacock.) CBS All Access anchors itself in the vast CBS show library, going into TV history as well as relying on the Star Trek series and the crime dramas that help define it today. It also has a selection of movies tied to Paramount’s ownership by CBS parent Viacom. It’s also a destination for live events like the annual Grammy Awards, and it’s becoming a destination for live sports fans. The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup and a new role as Champions League soccer host makes it a legitimate player in sports programming.

What is the UEFA Champions League?

Started in 1992—building from the European Champions Cup that only featured league winners from Europe’s prime soccer-playing nations—the UEFA Champions League features the top 32 European club teams. In June, UEFA holds play-in matches to select six slots; those teams, plus 26 pre-qualified teams, make up eight groups of four teams each, which play in a group stage, much like World Cup entrants do. That group play happens between September and December, with each team playing six matches total. (Matches are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to fit in between the weekend matches teams play in their respective leagues.)

From that field, the first and second place teams in each group advance to a 16-team knockout round that typically starts in February and goes through May; each round leading up to the final has two legs, with each team playing a home and away match to determine who advances and who goes home.

The final was supposed to be May 30 at Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul; the Turks will now host in 2021 provided the world returns to normal.
