Gillette Posts Ad Showing Plus-Size Woman In Bikini And Photo Sparks National Outrage

Gillette, the famous razor brand, is coming under fire for its attempt to widen the scope of beauty standards.

The company recently took to Twitter to share its new ad for the women-focused Gillette Venus, which encourages consumers to “Go out there and slay the day.” The ad features a bright and colorful action shot of Anna O’Brien, a plus-size fashion blogger and social media influencer with more than 300,000 Instagram followers.

However, many people believe it’s irresponsible marketing. Critics say the ad promotes a dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle. According to the CDC, obesity can cause a slew of health issues, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease and death.

Anna originally posted her bikini snapshot on her own Twitter handle before Gillette came calling. “The purpose of taking that photo was just to capture a really joyful time in my life,” she told “Good Morning America.” “I just wanted to remember how happy I felt. And that’s all it was.”

The internet is pretty divided. There are still many people defending both Gillette and Anna, saying there is simply no place for cyberbullying or body-shaming — and that weight does not necessarily indicate health.

Gillette has responded to the widespread criticism.
