From the biography of Sultan Mehmed:
“It was only five years after gaining his prestigious title, the Conqueror, that Mehmed in 1458 successfully conquered Athens, the heart of the ancient Western civilisation. It remained under Turkish rule for the next 330 years. On entering this ancient city, Mehmed marvelled at its historic beauty, especially the sight of the Acropolis, the citadel in Athens that held the Parthenon, the Ancient Greek temple. He appreciated its beauty as the “city of philosophers” and was generous to its inhabitants by exempting them from the head tax and devşirme as well as ordering religious tolerance to the Orthodox Christians. Mehmed only stayed in Athens for a mere four days. He donated funds for a small mosque to be built in the Roman agora, named Fatih Camii, which is still standing. He then left Athens and visited other conquests such as Thebes. “
