Reuploaded because of a few mistakes. To address some common concerns:
Ethiopia is colored in because of their five year period under Italian control, during which they were incorporated into Italian East Africa.
For ‘significant European influence’ it is not meant to imply that there was no European influence in the countries not colored in. Mongolia and Iran had extensive European influence and domination over many aspects of their politics, in some ways becoming like de facto colonies.
Pre-modern transcontinental empires (e.g. Alexander the Great’s) and the Ottoman Empire are not included.
