Emilia Clarke, 32, is the impressive actress behind Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. Landing that role was a dream come true for Emilia, but what she’s never revealed until now is that she experienced multiple health emergencies throughout the first few seasons of filming.

Emilia has suffered from two brain aneurysms and multiple surgeries. The first occurred just after she’d finished filming season one of Game of Thrones.

She opened up about her story in a recent New Yorker essay.

“The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain,” she wrote. “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture.”

Many patients don’t survive this particular type of catastrophe. Emilia did, but years later, she suffered a second aneurysm.

She’s since recovered, and she couldn’t be more grateful to have made it to the end of Game of Thrones. Her story is both fascinating and inspiring.
