Country music legend “The Gamber” Kenny Rogers passed away in March 2020. Several of his friends were surprised by his passing, with lifelong friend Dolly Parton noting that she saw that he had died on the news that morning. Happily, they were able to join together to remember the artist last night on CMT.

Country Music Television put together a tribute called “CMT’s GIANTS Kenny Rogers: A Benefit For MusiCares” to honor the late musician. CMT executive producer Margaret Comeaux explained, “Kenny Rogers transcended genres and generations with his musical versatility, legendary collaborations, and timeless appeal, and we’re honored to pay tribute to his legacy. Particularly in these turbulent times, we’ll stop and take a moment to allow the memory of our dear friend Kenny to bring us together and inspire us to lend support to those in the music community who are most in need.”

Several country artists performed Kenny’s hits, and a few from other genres made appearances as well. The artists include Lionel Ritchie, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Jennifer Nettles, and Michael McDonald. And, of course, Kenny’s best friend Dolly Parton was at the show as well.

Dolly chose to sing Kenny’s song “Sweet Music Man.” The song includes the lines “But you touched my soul with your beautiful song/You even had me singing along right with you” and is definitely an appropriate way for the star to look back on her friend’s life.
