It isn’t easy for a small child to spend a long stretch of time in a hospital. Thankfully, the staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital is dedicated to making each and every one of their patients feel at home during their stay. For one little girl, this meant throwing a very special princess party (in which staff all wore tiaras) to celebrate her being discharged.

Emma Krall is nearly two years old. She recently spent six weeks in the hospital recovering from major spinal surgery. Emma was born with skeletal dysplasia and scoliosis. She has spent nine of her 22 months in the hospital undergoing surgery and other treatments for her condition.

Emma has needed to wear a special medical device in order to keep her spine straight during her recovery. The little girl, who loves princesses, began calling the device her crown. The sweet term inspired hospital staff to throw her a special princess-themed party to celebrate her discharge.

Doctors and nurses at the hospital all donned tiaras on Emma’s special day. “We do not put on a tiara just for anyone,” her orthopedic surgeon Dr. Klane White said. “Emma is special that way.” Emma was also treated to a visit from Rapunzel. They played games together as Emma waved around her special sparkly wand. The special moment fit for a princess is one Emma’s sure to remember for years to come.
