Battle of the Somme, 1916
On July 1, 1916, 400,000 British soldiers and 200,000 French launched an assault on 50,000 German soldiers entrenched on the Somme. In one day 20,000 soldiers lost their lives, it was the deadliest day in the history of the United Kingdom.
