Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city now situated in Turkey’s province of Kars, next to the closed border with Armenia.

At its height, Ani was one of the world’s largest cities, with a population of well over 100,000.

In 1064, a large Seljuk army under Sultan Muhammad Alparslan conquered Ani after a siege of 25 days.

The largest building in Ani was Cathedral. When the city was conquered by the Seljuks, Sultan Alparslan and his soldiers performed their first prayer in Ani at the Cathedral.

Consequently, the cathedral was converted into a mosque called Fethiye Mosque.
