An Adorable Penguin And His Red Backpack Were The Highlight Of A Famous Ice Festival In China

One of the coldest cities in China found a way to warm the crowd’s hearts at an annual event. The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival is held each year to promote tourism during an otherwise quiet time of year. Temperatures in Harbin, located in northern China, can drop as low as -31 degrees, making the city feel like an igloo.

The festival features exquisite ice and snow sculptures, dog-sledding, and even safari-style expeditions that allow guests to check out Siberian tigers enjoying the deep freeze. There are also colorful lights around the festival that illuminate the winter wonderland as far as the eye can see. Fans love the ice sculptures that are made to resemble landmarks from all over the world. The month-long festival attracts millions of people each year. This year, there was one particular attraction that stole the show at the festival.

Penguins were brought in from a nearby aquarium, Harbin Polarland, to enjoy the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. They wobble around, greeting visitors with their adorable, friendly demeanor. One penguin (who was wearing a backpack) even wobbled his way down an ice chute to greet the visitors. Each penguin is only kept out for 15 minutes at a time in the frigid -15-degree temperatures. The little trip is beneficial for the penguins, who get to enjoy something closer to their natural habitat for a bit.
