After 10-Year-Old Gets Bitten By Venomous Snake, Her Family Is Hit With Bills Totaling $143,000

Oakley Yoderm, 10, was enjoying summer camp at Shawnee National Forest in Jackson Falls, Illinois. But in July 2018, during a hike in the woods with her bunkmates, Oakley felt a sharp, sudden sensation that stopped her in her tracks.

Something was attacking her foot; she never felt this kind of pain before.

As it turned out, Oakley had reportedly been bitten on the toe of her right foot by a copperhead snake — a venomous pit viper.

An untreated venomous snake bite can cause convulsions, blurred vision, tissue damage and respiratory arrest.

Oakley’s counselors knew they needed to get help, but they also knew the venom could spread more quickly if she panicked. They needed to keep her calm and still despite her rising anxiety levels.

One of the counselors threw Oakley onto her back and returned to the van. First responders airlifted her to the hospital for emergency treatment.

By this point, Oakley’s toe was oozing and turning a terrifying shade of bluish-purple. She feared she’d end up paralyzed or even die from the venomous bite.

At the hospital, doctors administered four vials of potentially life-saving anti-venom. She was then transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where she lives with her family.

Oakley’s parents, Josh and Shelli, were so grateful knowing their daughter received the best care possible. They would have paid any amount of money to save their daughter.

Less than 24 hours after being bitten by the snake, doctors sent Oakley home where she recovered.

Then the medical bills came…
