There are four views regarding the parents of the Messenger of Allฤh ๏ทบ:

1. They passed away on the religion of Prophet Ibraฬ„hiฬ„m (peace be upon him).
2. They passed away as Kuffaฬ„r [we seek the refuge of Allaฬ„h].
3. They were amongst the Ahl al-Fatrah.
4. They passed away as Ahl al-Fatrah but miraculously, the Prophet ๏ทบ made them alive and blessed them with Islaฬ„m and also his companionship.

The other 3 are accepted by them and whichever view is accepted, there is no detriment in it because in all 3 cases, the parents of the Prophet ๏ทบ will be in Paradise. There are numerous verses of the Qurโ€™aฬ„n and ahฬฃaฬ„diฬ„th that prove the Prophetโ€™s ๏ทบ parents were believers. We shall present ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ of them here.

โ€ [al-Khaฬ„zin, 5:107]

2) Where the Qurโ€™aฬ„n has taken an oath of the Prophet ๏ทบ, it has also done the same for his father. This oath proves the purity of his lineage.

This verse is an oath regarding all those fathers in whose loins the light of the Prophet ๏ทบ passed until it reached his grandfather, โ€˜Sayyidunaฬ„ ‘Abdul Muttalib and from him, Sayyidunฤ ‘Abdullaฬ„h. From him, it went to Sayyidah ฤ€mina (may Allaฬ„h be pleased with them all). Hence, an oath has been taken regarding all those people who were ancestors of the Prophet ๏ทบ.

After taking an oath regarding the begetter, the verse mentions the begot which shows that the whole lineage is part of the oath. Qaฬ„diฬ„ Thanaฬ„โ€™ Allaฬ„h Paฬ„niฬ„ Pattiฬ„ commentates on the verse: โ€œ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ž๐˜ขฬ„๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ˆฬ„๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ขฬ„๐˜ฉiฬ„๐˜ฎ (โ€˜๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ด-๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ขฬ„๐˜ฎ) ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๏ทบ.โ€ [al-Tafsiฬ„r al-Mazhariฬ„, 10:464]

1) The Prophet ๏ทบ himself clarified the purity of his lineage in his own words so that no person can dare challenge it. 2) Sayyidunaฬ„ โ€™Abdullaฬ„h ibn โ€˜Abbaฬ„s narrates that some people from the Quraysh once came to my auntie โ€“ Safiya bint โ€˜Abdul Muttalib โ€“ and showed pride at their lineage. Sayyidah Safiya refuted them by saying how can your lineage be the best when we are beloved to Allaฬ„h, that is, only the lineage of the Prophet ๏ทบ can be the best, not yours. They were angered upon hearing this and said, the lineage of the Prophet ๏ทบ is like a branch of dates growing from rubbish. Sayyidah Safiya told the Prophet ๏ทบ of the incident upon which the Prophet ๏ทบ became very angered and ordered Sayyidunฤ Bilaฬ„l to gather the people.

Thereafter, the Prophet ๏ทบ ascended the pulpit and asked them: โ€œOh people, Who am I?โ€ “The Messenger of Allaฬ„h ๏ทบ”, they replied. He then asked them to talk about his lineage. They replied by saying you are the grandson of โ€˜Abdul Muttalib and the son of ‘Abdullaฬ„h. โ€ [Masaฬ„lik al-Hฬฃunafaฬ„ with reference to Musnad Bazzaฬ„r, p. 132]

3) Some narrations show that after demise, the parents of the Prophet ๏ทบ were made alive and professed belief in the Prophet ๏ทบ. This is from the specialities that were granted to the Prophet ๏ทบ.

Imaฬ„m Tabaraฬ„niฬ„ narrates from Sayyidah โ€˜ฤ€iโ€™sha that during Hฬฃajjat al-Widaฬ„โ€™, the Prophet ๏ทบ went to a graveyard called โ€˜Hฬฃujuฬ„nโ€™. He was in a state of sadness and due to the will of Allaฬ„h, he remained there. He then became happy and returned to us. I asked: โ€œOh Prophet of Allaฬ„h, you were sad earlier but have returned happy.โ€ The Prophet ๏ทบ replied: โ€œI asked Allaฬ„h about my mother so Allaฬ„h made her alive for my sake. She professed belief in me and she was then returned to Barzakh.โ€ [Nuฬ„r al-Hudaฬ„ with reference to Majmaฬ„โ€™ al-Awsat, p. 42]

Hฬฃaฬ„fidh Abuฬ„ Bakr Khatiฬ„b Baghdaฬ„diฬ„ in โ€˜al-Sฤbiq wa al-Lฤhฬฃiqโ€™ and Hฬฃaฬ„fidh โ€˜Umar ibn โ€˜Uthmฤn in โ€˜al-Nฤsikh wa al-Mansลซkhโ€™ have narrated this narration of Sayyidah โ€˜ฤ€โ€™isha in greater detail in these words: โ€œWhen the Prophet ๏ทบ came with us at the time of Hฬฃajjat al-Widaฬ„โ€™, he took me with him to the Hฬฃujuฬ„n graveyard. He was extremely sad and asked me to wait so I did so leaning against the camel chair. A long time later, the Prophet ๏ทบ returned and he was exceptionally joyful and smiling. I said: โ€œYou had left here sorrowful and I too cried after hearing you cry. Now you are particularly happy. Why?โ€ The Prophet ๏ทบ replied: โ€œI had gone to see the grave of my mother and asked Allaฬ„h to make her alive. So, Allaฬ„h made her alive and she professed belief in me and then went back.โ€ [al-Sฤbiq wa al-Lฤhฬฃiq, p. 377]

If a question is asked that the verses and ahฬฃaฬ„diฬ„th presented earlier prove that the parents of the Prophet ๏ทบ were monotheists before they demised, whereas the narration above shows that they were not Muslims before but were made alive and then became Muslims. The answer to this is that the parents of the Prophet ๏ทบ were most definitely Muslims before. They were not made alive to accept Islaฬ„m because they were not Muslims, rather, the reason was so that they could attain the rank of companionship [sahฬฃaฬ„biyat].

โ€ [al-Nibraฬ„s, p. 527]

The abovementioned verses and ahฬฃaฬ„diฬ„th clearly prove that none of the ancestors of the Prophet ๏ทบ were infidels or polytheists because Allaฬ„h said about infidels and polytheists: Truly the Pagans are unclean [9:28]hence declaring their impurity. If the ancestors of the Prophet ๏ทบ were unbelievers, then how can the Prophet ๏ทบ declare them all to be pure?
