Gazi Hasan Pasa docked captured American soldiers and warships off the coast of Algeria. The then American President George Washington asked the Ottoman Caliph to return their troops and ships. The Caliph then demanded a huge ransom from George Washington and asked George Washington to personally come and sign a treaty. Forced, George Washington himself came and signed the treaty with the Caliph. It is the only treaty in American history written in a foreign language. According to this agreement, America paid taxes to the Ottoman Caliphate for eighteen consecutive years. ©
