Upon the news of Sultan Tugrul’s death, both Qutalmish Bey and Melik Alparslan began marching to the capital Rey to seize the throne.
Qutalmish Bey laid siege to Rey on 15 November 1063 but he was forced to lift the siege to face the approaching army of Alparslan.
According to the historian Izz al-Din ibn al’Athir who wrote in his book The Annals of the Saljuq Turks, when the two Seljuk armies met on a battlefield, Qutalmish’s forces fled from the battle.
Alparslan defeated Qutalmish in the battle of Damghan in 1063 and became the Sultan of the Great Seljuk state.
Qutalmish escaped, but while gathering his forces for an orderly retreat to his fort Girdkuh, he fell from his horse in hilly terrain and died on 7 December 1063.
