The idea that a perfect meal should consist of three courses originally stems from the renowned Muslim trendsetter, ‘Alī ibn Nāfī. He brought the idea with him from ‘Irāq to the Muslim city of Córdoba in Spain in the 9th century. From there, the concept later spread to the rest of Europe.

He invented the multi-course meal, starting dinner with soup, followed by an entrée, and ending with dessert.
