The Battle of Köse Dağ was fought between the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum under the command of Sultan Giyaseddin Kaykhusraw II and the Mongol Ilkhanids under the command of Baiju Noyan on June 26, 1243.

Sultan Kaykhusraw II, mobilized an army to try and stop the Mongol advance. The two forces met at Köse Dağ, just east of the north-central Anatolian city of Sivas.

The Mongols achieved a decisive victory, and the Seljuk dynasty passed under Mongol suzerainty as vassals.

The defeat resulted in a period of turmoil in Anatolia and led directly to the decline of the Seljuk state.
