Police Officer Christian Pinilla of Duncanville, Texas, sprung into action when he received a call about a child found alone and possibly asleep inside a vehicle.
Officer Pinilla arrived to find the infant locked in a car and strapped into her car seat. She was reportedly crying, sweating, and covered in vomit.
Temperatures outside were in the 90s that day, making it 123 degrees inside that sweltering car.
Officer Pinilla immediately requested an ambulance as he tried to open the SUV doors, to no avail.
He then proceeded to heroically smash through the car window, using his baton, until he could pull the helpless infant to safety and get her into his air-conditioned squad car.
It was around this time that the little girl’s family returned to the car.
The incident was reported to Child Protective Services. Police said, “All indications seem to point to this being a mistake caused by false assumptions and faulty communication about the infant’s well-being.”
Everyone is just thankful the incident did not result in tragedy. According to the National Safety Council, “An average of 39 children under the age of 15 die each year from heat stroke after being left in a vehicle. Nearly every state has experienced at least one death since 1998, and in 2018, a record number of 53 children died after being left in a hot vehicle, closely followed in 2019 with 52 deaths.”
Officer Pinilla has since been honored with a Badge of Courage Award for ultimately saving the little girl from heatstroke.
